Roadshields Switzerland

Hello Guys

We are testing Roadshields right now, please share your thoughts here.

What is shown in the Client and how?

  • In the moment we see shields for freeways and minor highways (numbered main streets max. 2 digits)
  • The shield generation is limited to one shield per segment. That means “A3 - E60” will create only one shield (A3) for one freeway segment. Although shields for E-roads are possible as well, we are limited to the main name.
  • Minor Highways: At the moment they will create a shield when the name is NX, HX or “NX - Name” and “HX - Name”(H for the main streets and N for the national streets as in the wiki)

Maybe one day:

  • In the future it is planned to create shields from the “alt name” as well, but there is no time frame and development hasn’t begun.

More limitations:

  • TTS will always announce the whole name as defined in the street name in WME.
  • It is not possible to display a shield and a street name (segment name) in the client, and waze will not change this. So if per standard a name is “H5 - Dorfstrasse” only the shield will be displayed. As you can see in the last screenshot, the full name will remain on the tooltip if you tap on a road in the client. The full name will also appear in the navigation list “All Turns”
  • Directions like “A2 - A3 > Luzern Bern Zürich” on a freeway segment will only create a shield for “A2”, which is not a bad thing at all, it looks tidier on the app.
  • In 3D navigation mode it will be displayed the same way as with the shields, only numbers or name. If we want to display a name like a tunnel in 3D navigation mode the segment should not have a prefix number as you can see in screenshot 4 (2.png)

What you think?

For us locals the freeway shield with just Ax is perfect. The option to have the Exx number is mostly used for people going accross countries. I guess when driving it will make little to no difference for them since the physical road signs show both numbers on freeways so they can easily follow the E number if they prefer by just looking.

It’s nice that for minor highways the shield is created only if Nx or Hx is added to the name, cool feature.

Will that work also for smaller freeway segments? Example : The A1 has the A1a ?

Is that what we see around Zurich in your first attached picture? 1H and 1L ?

Of course the E-numbers are not that important for us, as per limitation it isn’t possible to diplay cause of the main name of the freeways.

The question is also what can you imagine under Hx and Nx? H is “Hauptstrasse” N is “Nationalstrasse”

A1H and A1L is indeed 1H and 1L cause it’s official as you can see them on the freeway signs (without A), so A1a will display 1a, the same for H1a it’s 1a

It looks something like this

Thanks this helps a lot to imagine how it will be.

I know we use N for “routes nationales” around here, however I’m not sure I’ve seen the equivalent for H, nor if they have numbers… I could look it up.

Well our only problem is the three language thing, “route nationale” is imaginable for french spoken people, the same in Ticino “via nazionale” but for the regular H is no equivalent in your areas. maybe “principal”

For sure they all have numbers, more than we can imagine, but it would end up in a shield forrest, so that’s why we prefer only the numbered main streets with max. 2 digits. There are a lot of “route cantonales” which have 3 digits. Compare to Googlemaps or map.search.ch, it’s simple and tidy.
