I’m wondering why Pulaski Hwy is not marked as a Major Highway instead of minor. Is it for routing purposes?
That was something we debated a long time ago. The definitions of what was major and minor have shifted somewhat over time. Rt. 40 is one of those that has straddled the line depending on which definition you used. In my opinion portions qualify as major, but not all the senior editors would agree.
Gotcha. I would think that it should be considered a Minor Highway until it leaves the city limits and heads into baltimore county. Both on the east and west ends. Especially since there’s nothing special about using Rt. 40 routing-wise. It’s just as slow as any other street in the city. However, on the east side, once you pass Moravia Park drive it seems more like a Major Highway.
As a matter of fact, I think from E Monument st, Eastward, it should be classified as Major and westward should be downgraded to Minor until it turns into Baltimore Nat’l Pike. There, it should return to Major
Makes sense to me. I do agree with Jon.
Considering the fact that it’s a US Route, extends beyond multiple states, and is often used as a freeway alternative, I think it’s safe to classify it as Major beyond the inner city.
Do you need unlocks? I recall locking a good portion of it long ago.

It looks like it can be changed to “Major” all the way to S Dupont Hwy in Deleware. S Dupont Hwy is also classified as a Major Highway

I would tend to argue that there are a lot of portions of that highway through Havre de Grace up to DE that really shouldn’t be major highway. Particularly when you get into Elkton and DE, you are lucky to hit 45 MPH with the lights and such. I drive this (god forsaken) route every day, but am pretty indifferent to what level it is set at.
Awhile ago, it was set at Major Highway, and there was consensus to drop it to Minor Hwy because of how slow it is at times. Frankly, doesn’t matter to me, but I always looked at Minor vs. Major as a “capacity and speed” determination. US-13 through DE, particularly after the US-40 split definitely is a Major Hwy, as it starts to have more off-grade connectors, and a distinct lack of traffic lights.
Up to you guys. I can take care of the entirety of 40 from Aberdeen up to where it meets up with 13, just a few lvl 5 unlocks in there I’ll get fixed individually. Like I said though, do we want to make the entire highway set to “major” or just portions? What’s the real definition for it?
Personally, I don’t think speed should be the criteria. Waze should be able to know speed without our input.
I can go either way, but I’m not sure if what else in Cecil County would be major. The MD SHA switches its classification back and forth between principal artery and minor artery, at least in Cecil County.
Yeah most of the run through Cecil county is a barren wasteland where I may or may not exceed the posted speed limit by a large margin

Considering the fact that Rt.40 is used as an alternate route to i-95 I find that it should absolutely be classified as major. Once it gets up to Havre De Grace I’m not familiar with its efficiency so I can’t speak on that. However, from Baltimore to Harford County it should absolutely be Major.

I’m fine with changing this all to Major Hwy. Looks like Russblau and a couple others already jumped the gun and got started on it I’ll take care of everything I can from Havre de Grace through to the US-13 merge in DE, and put in update requests for any locked segments I can’t touch.
OPA typically indicates a Waze Minor Highway. Minor Arterial can go eitherway, depends on what it traces back to in urban areas. HOWEVER, we talked about making Minor Arterial a Minor Highway no matter what at the March Meetup - we are still waiting to hear back from Ehud about some things in the routing engine before committing to this change.
I continue to disagree. If OPA is minor highway then nothing at all would be major highway here as all expressways here are Waze freeways.
