Say hello to Counties!

Currently waiting on HQ to remove all the (Belfast) suffixes. Once that’s done, it’s up to you to sort out!

Do you have a plan or for Belfast? Are there any definitive definitions for the districts there? The best way to rename or merge cities is via the City Rename Request form, but everything else would have to be done by hand.

If you can send me a ESRI Shapefile or something, I can help you out. Get in touch…

I’ll get working on a plan! And we’ll take it from there!

Have the suffixes been stripped? I’m seeing suffix free areas of belfast

What should we do where a town spans two counties?
e.g. Emsworth here spans Hampshire and West Sussex as the county boundary follows the river.

If I correct the county for the segments to the East of here am I effectively creating 2 cities? … in which case I’m guessing it would be better to leave as is.

There is only one Emsworth (in Hampshire) and it should not be named again in West Sussex.

There are 2 villages called Broadwell in Gloucestershire which have had the district names appended to distinguish them, but they are the wrong way round.

The one near Stow-on-the-Wold should be Broadwell (Cotswolds)

and the one near Coleford should be Broadwell (Forest of Dean)
https://www.waze.com/en-GB/livemap?lon=-1.70097&lat=51.94651&zoom=16

Can the merge/rename form allow me to request a swap of names? …or do I need to raise 3 rename requests to avoid them being merged; i.e. A->C, B->A, C->B?

Maybe the larger one should be plain “Broadwell”?

And then if you do need a multi-stage edit, it would only need two stages instead of three.

Doh! This is my fault. I’ll sort it…

Hi,

Strangely enough I came across this whilst looking for a village I wished to create (there is a UR around somewhere!) as there is a UR there saying that specifically the second “Broadwell” shouldn’t be “Forest of Dean”!
Good luck with that one!

Des. . .

Will it be possible to get new ‘counties’ created?

I’m don’t know about this - it’s a pretty complicated process, which we only had one shot at.
Talk to me on Hangouts what you’re thinking…

Thought it might be but that’s ok…

Got it… that’s how I stumbled across the problem in the first place!

When I create a new road in Southampton it defaults to Southampton, Hampshire and promptly tells me that Southampton doesn’t exist and would I like to create it?

How is the default county for new segments controlled? … and is it possible to change this area to default to Southampton, Southampton?

I’m not sure how it works. It’s worth noting that counties can be smudged by long segments, meaning that they can appear as options when they should not. We should try to minimise this by chopping long segments at county boundaries.

Further to Tim’s post, the usual “road” segment culprit for a county smudge is a Railway. If you zoom out to the maximum level which shows railways, and then use the Toolbox “select segments” function (green tick), you’ll get a list of all the segments in the area. Then if you change the columns to show “state”, you can see the county for each. If a railway labelled with one county name goes substantially into another county, chop it at the boundary.

However, places can also cause city and country smudges. Especially linear places like rivers. I would suggest that large places should not have “city” and “state” set. City we can edit. Unfortunately, although it is valid for a place not to have a “state” - and plenty don’t - we cannot at present create a new place which doesn’t have a “state”, nor can we get rid of “state” once it exists.
