After nearly 5 years of waiting, counties have finally been added to the UK!
All our cities, towns and villages are now associated with the county they are in, and this information will be used for address searches in the app. County suffixes are no longer required on the end of city names to keep them unique, although there are still a few instances of duplicate town names within a county.
For cities that are also their own Unitary Authority, they can now have their suburbs defined within them. For example: Blackpool, Derby, Southampton. Note that not all UAs are also cities; e.g. all counties in Scotland and Wales.
County names and boundaries were derived from official government sources (namely Ordnance Survery), and can be seen on the new wiki page UK Counties. If you spot a problem with the name or state of a city, please request a change via this form.
DO NOT attempt to fix city names manually by editing segments!
We will be giving Waze a (very) long list of city names to fix in the database, and until that work is done there will be a freeze on adding new names.
Brilliant! now Belfast might actually start to look like Belfast…
Having had a bit of a look about the map in the editor, it appears that roads over the border in Ireland have the additional county field, would this be due to it being applied as an area rather than using the Country field?
Tyne and Wear is made up of five Metropolitan Districts, which are represented as 5 counties in Waze. What you see for Newcastle is correct. See Wikipedia for explanation…
This does mean you’ll be able to correctly map the suburbs within Newcastle, e.g. Byker!
Cities are now named uniquely within a county rather than in all of UK, so only if that city already exists within the given county are you able to use it (while new cities are frozen).
Some towns have suffix, for example, Kenton (Newcastle upon Tyne). Suppose we should change it to Kenton without suffix. While new cities are frozen, should I wait for CA to submitt the list to Waze or should I use the Cities form to request the change?
I have proposed that the (District) name be added as the suffix when a town name appears more than once in the county. Gazetteer.org can provide this information.
Places in Unitary Authorities (i.e all of Wales) don’t have districts, so you’ll have to look somewhere else like Wikipedia. Parish or nearest city may be appropriate in some circumstances.
We have a short list of duplicate cities that we’re working on. Meanwhile, a list of 2,400 other cities has been submitted to HQ for renaming without suffixes.
There is the potential issue of “county smudge”, where a long segment carries the name of a county some distance into a neighbouring county. Over time, editors might add new segments nearby with the wrong county.
To mitigate this effect, editors might like to check along county boundaries for long segments (particularly Motorway and Railway), and split them into two with appropriate county names. Extensions WME Colour Highlights and WME Geometries (with the Counties file I published previously) would make this exercise relatively quick and easy.
Can I ask what is the, current, proposed plan for Belfast? seeing as how I believe the way it is currently laid out to be completely and totally wrong. There are a lot of suffixes!
