I’ve noticed many, many speed cameras added to the map by Level 1 editors … most of the occurred around 12/30 - 1/2.
Many of these are in areas I’ve driven, and are at intersections where traffic surveillance cameras are mounted on traffic signal poles/arms. There are no hi-res cameras nor strobe lights at these intersections.
No need to worry. Most of those were added through the app reporting mechanism, and they don’t exist unless approved. Unapproved cams disappear altogether after a week or two.
Feel free to delete if you want, but if you don’t delete them, everything will be just fine. I don’t even turn on the cam layer.
By the way, over on Rt 1 in Lawrence (near the new WaWa) there are red light cameras at the intersection. I assume they’re de-activated and just not removed. Is that something that should have a “dummy camera” marked on Waze?
Well, the Wiki said dummy cameras are a UK thing … apparently they put up a pole and enclosure and don’t put a camera inside. Silly Brits.
I don’t think we get a tremendous amount of users adding cameras from the app at that intersection, so I’m not sure it’s necessary to put up a dummy. Eventually they’ll take those defunct cameras down, or someone will crash into them and knock them down.
I was more-or-less wondering if the ‘dummy’ thing was something we’re doing in NJ.
A lot of times, you just have people “exploring” the features of Waze and pushing buttons to see what they do (hopefully as passengers). Often, this ends up dropping random “camera” reports.
However, you can be pretty sure that no matter what things look like, there are no summons-issuing cameras of any kind anywhere in the state. There used to be, for a short while a few years ago, but the state has since eliminated the program. Now, they are just plain prohibited.
I actually think municipalities haven’t taken the cameras down. I know in Piscataway there are still several intersections in the pilot program that still have the cameras up. However, the signs stating that the intersection is being monitored by a Red Light Camera have been removed.
Looking at the NJ DoT webpage, it states that participating municipalities had to remove signs and disconnect the cameras. Theres is nothing stating to remove them.
Let’s be mindful when responding to URs or other editors since they may not be aware that the cameras are inactive.
