I see that Google Crisis Response has put out a crisis map with road closures & other info around the Boulder area. http://google.org/crisismap/2013-boulder-floods Is the local Waze community helping to create / update / maintain such a resource? It would seem reasonable, as this is clearly a “Mega Traffic Event” in north-central Colorado.
On the other hand, the local Wazers MAY be too busy just getting themselves to higher ground, and not be in a position to organize such an effort…
Soon* it will be possible for editors to handle such events without the intervention of Waze staff. Ideally we’d get people inside emergency services or news traffic departments access as well. At least one of our local traffic reporters is already a Waze user.
This needs to be more of a group effort as it takes a lot of work and checking to get it compete and correct. In fact the data above I got from CDOT isn’t complete in the status. A lot of the roads listed say “Flooding”, but I know that some of them would be better described as “Washed out”.
I think this is a decent way of sharing the road closure information. If you agree and want to be included as editors of the list, let me know.
FYI, I don’t like the usage of mile markers (MM) for the start and finish of the road section that are closed. I would eventually like to go to lat/lon coordinates or editor permalinks. In fact, I’m up for any good idea on how it can be changed.
Waze keeps trying to send me down closed roads which I can mark as closed, but need multiple users to report apparently to keep from sending people that way.
