Chicago has started to install speed cameras. So far they announced they are at Gompers Park, Garfield Park, Marquette Park and Washington Park. 8 other locations by parks and schools will go up in September. The ones at the parks should be set for 30 mph. They have set a time for enforcement, 6am-11pm, but we can’t control time. School zones are tricky. They are setting them for 20mph 7am-7pm and 30mph 7pm-7am. And this is for school days. So setting them for 20mph is going to have to do.
I set the ones for Gompers Park, and this was by info I found on one link that listed the hundred block they were in. They may have to be adjusted. I didn’t see any unapproved speed cams near the other parks yet.
I just hope CDOT adds them to their red light camera map/database. That way we can get a better idea of exact placement.
The whole school speed zone is going to be a PITA. One speed on school days during school hours, another speed during the weekends or at night (and school breaks?). I do agree the lower speed (i.e. the one tickets will get issued against) is the correct one to set even if some people will report it as being false.
The CDOT map site does now include a check box to show speed cameras. I see two cameras around Gompers Park (Foster & Pulaski) and the map indicates which directions are monitored. I’m guessing speed cameras will monitor both directions so will require 2 cameras at the location.
I believe I had a problem a while ago with the site not working correctly. I think it had something to do with Java/Javascript permissions. It’s working for me in both Chrome (minimal blocking/privacy plugins) and Firefox (a ton of blocking/privacy plugins) at the moment.
For camera placement, do we know whether these are forward or backward facing? In other words, do they photograph the front of the vehicle and driver or - like the red light cameras - photograph the rear of the vehicle?
Finally got it to work. I see what you mean by putting a camera facing each way. They list them as NB/SB and EB/WB. At Gompers park, I set the one red light camera facing SB with the 30 mph speed camera too. I then added the other camera on Foster.
Now we just need a guinea pig to try them out.
Hereis a link to info on the cameras. Looks like it takes the pic from the rear.
I encountered a marked one last night, looking at my route it was in the Gompers Park area (since I passed the Fosters and Pulaski intersection you mentioned. They were positioned to photograph the rear of my vehicle from the looks of it, it was pointing the same direction I was driving.
