I am new to Waze but am very excited in the product. I think we can make this much better than any of those commercial GPS products. Way to go!..(no pun intended) I hope to contribute a lot. Okay now for my point.
I notice that we can note speed cams but in reality, in the USA, the majority of cameras are just stop light violation cams. That is they are checking for people running lights not for checking speed. I am wondering if we (okay Waze) should change the name to just traffic cam or violation cam. Traffic cam might be confused with the numerous web cams that monitor traffic but don’t report violations. We don’t care about those.
As I said in another thread, not true. New Orleans has over a dozen speed cameras—only speed cameras—around the city. We have a number of combination red light/speed cameras, and we have a number of speed cameras.
It differs highly by municipality—neighbouring Jefferson Parish has only red light cameras—but don’t assume that, just because you don’t have them, no one does.
As i said in answer to you… The majority of cameras are traffic light. over 7100 traffic light compared to 750 speed cameras in the entire USA… AGAIN who cares! The point is we need a distinction. Or maybe we don’t just a different word to describe them! Actually I am beginning to think who even cares that we call traffic light cameras speed cams. We are getting hung up on minutia and I am sorry I brought it up.
Yes, that’s fine. A separate option for red light cameras would be great. I gathered the impression, however, that you thought the speed camera option should be removed entirely. Sorry for any misunderstanding.
Hi Sketch,
They could never get rid of speed cams and no I was not suggesting that they do. Speed cams are very much a reality in other places in the world and as you pointed out and my research shows is becoming popular here in the USA. While 90% of all cameras in the USA are traffic light cameras there are at least 10% which are “speed” cams. My whole point was the distinction between traffic light and speed cams. However, this gets especially ugly if they are combined. I guess the rule, if you know, would be to mark it speed cam… but that is putting the cart before the horse anyway, as we only have a choice for speed cam.
Anyway, this subject for me is a dead horse and the points have been made and remade.
Everyone, happy wazing… and watch those cameras!
