I just upgraded from Waze 4.1.0.1 to 4.2.0.1, but I have an unusual observation about the older 4.1.0.1 version. I had a couple of trips from the Greensboro, NC area to Atlanta, GA in the past 4 weeks. On the first trip, I noticed speed limit info began to appear on the return trip just south of Greenville, SC. I found the SL only showed if I was exceeding the PSL (I assume that’s normal).
On the most recent trip (May/13-15/2016), there was no speed limit info on the southbound trip. But, on the return northbound trip back to Greensboro, the speed limit again showed up about 25 miles south of Greenville, SC. I didn’t notice where it quit displaying, but think it was somewhere north of Greenville, SC before reaching Charlotte, NC.
I find it curious that the speed limit function only works on the northbound section but not the southbound section of I85 near Greenville, SC and nowhere else. Is that unusual?
It is normal for the speed limit to only pop up when exceeding the speed limit. Was it just the one place on 85 you had issues or the entire route?? Speed limits are not active in all states and coming from NC through SC or from GA through SC I am not sure they start to work automatically or if you have to restart the app once in SC.
I never saw the speed limit pop up going southbound on I85. The only time I saw it was northbound , about 25 miles short of Greenville and I think it went away somewhere north of Greenville.
I am almost certain if you restart the app once in SC you won’t have any issues. Speeds are not live in GA or NC and I can confirm after talking to another editor that once crossing into SC the speed limits don’t start working in app unless you restart.
Good to know. But I have to wonder why the speed limit began working in the vicinity of Greenville going northbound on two separate occasions? No app restart needed.
I’ll have to remember to restart Waze next time I’m southbound on I85 and enter SC and see if the speed limit function is working.
Is there a list somewhere that could tell me where the speed limit works in the USA?
Waze alerts the Champs when new states are added. So far, as mentioned in this thread:
I travel between NC and SC daily. Going from SC, I get speed limits up until shortly after crossing into NC. Heading from NC, I have yet to see speed limits appear in SC until I restart the app, but I admit I haven’t tested it lately. It used to be that if you started in a state with speed limits and went into a state that wasn’t enabled yet, you’d still get the speed limits, but it looks like that’s changed recently. Also, as jwe mentioned, if you’re travelling slower than the limit, you won’t see what the limit is, but you will see a grey ring around the spedometer (see screenshot), showing that there is a limit set on the road. If you don’t see that, then the limit is missing.
I have a trip to VA this coming weekend. I’ll look for that gray ring once I cross the state line. If I don’t see it, I’ll restart the app and see if the speed limit indicator shows up. I rarely travel below the PSL, so I should be seeing the SL all the time where it’s available.
I still find it odd that coming out of GA northbound on I85, the SL begins working just south of Greenville. But it won’t show going southbound on I85 out of NC. All with no reset of the app.
Sure enough, once I crossed the VA state line, nothing changed on my display until I stopped and restarted the app. Then SL info and the gray circle were shown.
I look forward to Waze fixing this so you don’t have to restart the app to get SL info on the display… or better yet, having SL info for all states.
What happens when you cross state lines between bordering states that both support SL? Do you still have to restart the app or will it continue to display the SL?
What determines whether or not a state (or locality) supports the SL display?
One other thing, I find the SL display size small and difficult to read, once it shrinks down to size after initially popping up once you reach the PSL. I also noticed multiple instances where the PSL and the Waze SL were different.
Only states that have a certain percentage of roads mapped with speeds are live. Some states just aren’t to that point yet. If you are in a state with speeds and cross into another state with speeds I would think it would keep working without restarting the app, but I am not totally certain of this. You have to remember volunteer map editors must enter these speeds on each and every road segment…so it’s a long process and mistakes can happen. Sometimes the street view is old and not correct. Best thing to do if you have an issue with incorrect speeds is just submit a map issue. As for the other app related suggestions/issues there is a specific forum for to make those types of suggestion.
Yep! The editors pushed pretty hard over the past few weeks to get as many done as they could and it was enabled today, along with Georgia, Florida, and a few other states.
