Hi all,
Just recently come back to waze and getting heavy into map editing.
Moving up the ranks with 50k points in about 2 weeks.
Curious to know what speeds are used for calculating routes. I.e. A major hwy/fwy i would assume is calculated at 100 kph. What about minor hwy, primary st and streets. What speeds are they calculated at ?
Any info would be great as a search of the wiki didnt help.
Thanks
Brad
Hi Brad,
One of the key-features of Waze is the point that it uses actual speed data for eta calculations. When we drive around with the Waze app running, we constantly report our speed and Waze calculates average speeds form these data for each segment at different times.
As far as I know there are only speeds values that depend on the street type for newly created segements. As soon as Waze has collected enough real speed values, these will be used for routing calculations.
Is this the answer you’ve been looking for?
Regards,
Gordonski
Thanks Gordonski.
If that’s the way it works then no problem.
maybe i have some old people driving on a backroad very slowly compared to me and thats why the calcutalions are out !
cheers for the info
Yeah I think the default speeds that Gordonski mentioned are slow and it takes a while for Waze to get “enough speed values”. It took ages for the estimate for the drive from turning off the main road to my house (about 2km) to get close to correct. When I say ages I mean weeks.
Thanks gav.
My local area still routes me the long way which i dont take…lol…
Maybe once or twice you can drive the long route that Waze tells you…doing this might set the speed data straight in Waze’s servers and it might realise how wrong it’s been all this time…
Oh and for the record, be careful with those map edits. You seem to have been hitting allow all turns on a lot of nodes where it must not be enabled, such as on turn lanes. Just really be careful here.
