Hi team - what’s the “standard” we apply for speed limit changes on a segment?
Do we split the segment to put the speed limit change in the right spot - or just apply the speed limit change at the nearest logical segment boundary (e.g. change in street name, intersection, etc)
Obviously where it’s a short distance into a segment (e.g. 50 zone sign being 20 metres in, just do the whole segment) but what about where it’s halfway along, a couple of hundred metres? Do we just go with the speed for the “majority” of the segment in the interest of keeping the map simple?
E.g. this segment in Holmesville - speed limit changes from 50 to 60km at the point ~200-250 metres southbound. (I’ve put a map comment on at the spot, will remove it once I’ve finalised this query!) Permalink
The guidance on the US page (https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/USA/Speed_limits) says that we should never create a new junction for changing the speed limit within 200 feet (60m) of an existing junction. At 1000 feet (300m), do create a junction. Between that, it would depend on prevailing conditions (e.g. don’t create it if it was in a position where traffic build-up means that the transit time information could be screwed up because the traffic builds up back past the new junction).
On your particular example, I’d definitely put it in.
No worries. I remembered the guidance from when it was easier to find (old wiki) - a lot of the information that I’d expect to be in the (new) Global wiki is only on US-specific pages, not Global ones - which is not particularly helpful for editors that joined after the wiki transition.
