SR-1 and I-95 Junction in DE

Requesting an unlock of the SR-1 and I-95 intersection in DE. The construction of the new on-ramp from SR-1 N to I-95 N is complete and can safely be updated now.

I unlocked the interstate segments so you can rename. What else needs unlocked? Highlight them in a permalink.

Should be good to go now. I updated the ramps to reflect what just opened, as well as re-aligned Rt-1 to where it is currently.

That whole interchange is getting a massive do over, so as pieces complete and open, I’ll update the map accordingly.

Just an FYI, this whole area is basically in a constant state of change because of all the construction. I will keep up with the major changes as they occur, so please don’t change anything just yet.

Can’t wait for it to be done, traffic around there is absolutely horrendous at times.

Just cleaned up a mess of new intersections in this area…since the majority of segments and intersections are locked at least a level 3 restriction, a couple level 1 editors began adding more segments to reflect the (currently incomplete) new ramps and connectors. I PM’d them to post about changes in the forum, or at least to request an unlock so we can track any changes better. Much of the area is still in an unfinished crazy state of construction. New “big green signs” are slowly being added, so we’ll have to keep an eye on updating the ramp/wayfinder segments appropriately.

I’m requesting any AMs and CMs to keep an eye on this area to make sure it doesn’t become cluttered and messed up. I drive this route fairly regularly, and will update the new ramps, exit names, and connectors as they open.

Someone is asking that these ramps be edited here: http://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=60767 https://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=622&t=60933

I drove through the interchange on Friday night, going from I-95 S to SR-1 S & it appeared to work correctly but there are obviously other issues as there appear to be several fresh URs in that area. I don’t know enough about the interchange to make any informed edits, but I can lock/unlock up to Level 4. If anyone can look at this, I would really appreciate it.

I’m out of the country for about another week, so I can’t take a look. The ramps were definitely near completion before I left, so I would not be surprised that theyare complete. I would go ahead and let them reedit the area, and re-lock to level. I will verify signage and geometry next week when I’m back.

Thanks for the heads up!

Does this ramp need to be realigned? https://www.waze.com/editor/?lon=-75.65055&lat=39.68259&zoom=5&layers=TBFTFFTTTTTTTTTTTTTFTTTTFT&segments=68341658 There are a lot GPS tracks to the south of its current location.

Also, does anything need to be locked at lvl 5?

Alright, I cleaned up the map and had it match the new geometry as much as I could figure. Jondrush, I also realigned the ramp in question to match GPS and the DelDOT PDF of the new area.

I fixed and corrected turn restrictions, revised the names, and locked everything at level 3 for now as I’m fairly certain it now matches reality. We can lock at level 5 later on after all the construction is complete, but leaving it at 3 has prevented any serious problems from cropping up in the past.

Discussion time.

I added the remaining un-opened new lanes/ramp that is still ongoing.

My question is this: what road type should we set it to? Eventually, this segment will serve as a direct route to I-95 N, but dumping drivers onto the LEFT most lanes, which makes it easier if you intend to drive to I-95 N / I-495 N. It also will have a small cut over to the I-95 N ramp that comes directly off SR-1 N, intended for those that want to just go to I-295 N towards NJ.

I am thinking it should be considered a freeway type, much like the rest of SR-1, with a ramp wayfinder segment in the beginning for signage. This way, Waze will not impose a ramp penalty on the segment, and will route drivers that way.

The official DOT plans for this can be found at the top post for this topic.

Thoughts?

I’m not really understanding the options here. I’ve never been able to verify a ramp penalty in the routing. But if there is one, I don’t understand why having a ramp wayfinder in the beginning for signage would be different from having the entire segment a ramp.

I do agree that the signage/routing instructions are the key consideration. If you want a keep right instruction to stay on SR-1, then you will need identically typed segments leaving the split. If not the I-95 exit can be ramp and SR-1 can remain freeway.

I think for the time being, I am going to leave the ramps from SR-1 N to I-95 as ramp type. Once the new roadways open up, I’m going to monitor how Waze handles routing through that area after it gathers “enough” traffic data. I have a feeling you are correct in that there probably isn’t really a ramp penalty per se, as short wayfinder segments would likely have an adverse affect in the routing algorithm.

I’ve updated the map in that area accordingly (signage for the new ramps is not yet up, so I just have placeholder names for now), let me know what you think.

FYI the northbound ramp to I-95 from SR-1 N opened yesterday morning. The old Exit 165B to I-95N is closed as well. The map has been updated accordingly–please note any issues/concerns here!

Hello crew… there are two open UCs at this junction reporting that the ramps are not aligned correctly. Do you know the area well enough to address them? Thanks!

Unfortunately, this isn’t an ‘error’ that can be fixed. Here’s the just of what’s happening:

The new I-95 N ramp from SR-1 N is a left exit off SR-1 N. This exit then allows you to take either the leftmost ramp which puts you on the left lane of I-95 N traffic, which is ideal for I-495/I-95 to Wilmington/Philly.

The right ramp puts your on the I-95 N right lanes, which is convenient for I-295/NJ Tpke/Delaware Memorial Bridge.

As far as I know/can see, there is no real mechanism to “direct” Waze to select the “correct” ramp based on which route it is routing people. I’ve driven this multiple times, and unfortunately, I haven’t been able to determine a discernible pattern, other than what ramp appears to have more traffic on it.

Thank you for helping clarify that! That makes sense. I appreciate you helping me get the UR closed out. Have a great day, and thanks again for the assistance.

We have a similar situation in northern Virginia at the “Springfield Mixing Bowl” interchange. There are two entrance ramps onto I-95 N from a particular side road. One ramp puts you in the left lane, the other one puts you in the right lane, both about 100 yards before the interstate splits to I-395 and I-495. The way we’ve handled this in Waze is to extend the two entrance ramps, parallel to the interstate, up to and just beyond the point where the interstate splits. Permalink. This way, each ramp can only be used by Waze to route traffic bound for one side of the split. Would that work here?

Unfortunately, that won’t really work as it’s a pretty far distance to do so. In addition, there is an exit prior to the I-95/I-495 and I-295 split going northbound.

Your idea is perfect for solving that problem–but if you take a look at the permalink you’ll see what I mean. Right now, I can’t think of a good way to solve this without making it worse.
