What I have alway thought to be a county route is a state route (600 and up). I am now confused since route 620 in one county is miles apart (25+) in another county and never connects.
EX: Part of 620 in Clarke County Part of 620 in Frederick County
What are the county route numbers?
Also I am seeing a conflict in the naming used. In the wiki it states “State Hwy XXX”, but I am seeing “State Rte XXX” in the editor. Which way should be used.
Welcome to Virginia. There are no numbered county routes anywhere in Virginia to my knowledge. All of the route numbers > 599, except for I-664 and VA 785 and 895 (both pseudo-interstate numbers) are “secondary state highways”; the numbers are assigned by VDOT and, except in cities and some larger towns, the roads are maintained by VDOT. As you observed, the same secondary route number can be re-used in multiple counties for different roads (although there are also some cases of secondary routes that cross a county boundary and have the same number on both sides.)
There are two types of secondary route signage: the small rectangular placard with a number and arrow(s) used routinely in suburbs and residential subdivisions, and the larger number-in-a-circle style used more commonly (but not exclusively) in rural areas.
Two counties – Arlington and Henrico – do maintain their own highway systems, but as far as I know neither of them has posted county route numbers.
My personal opinion is that either “State Hwy” or “State Rte” should be acceptable, although you should be sure that the same style is used consistenly along a route’s entire length. Also, relatively few roads in Virginia are known primarily by their route numbers, so these should be in an alternate name field in the vast majority of cases.
Also, my personal opinion is that it is not worth bothering with the secondary highway numbers at all for the streets that are only identified by the small rectangular placard; I would only include the number in the Waze map if there are full-size route markers along the road.
I have been living hear my hole life (30 yrs) and was told that it is county routes in my area. Even at gas stations they are refuted to county routes. I guess you never stop learning anything.
I have also been told that we should be using SR-X for State routes by an Level 6 CM so it will show up properly in the waze client (with the route number in the little circle, and voice guidance.) Which way should it be done. “SR-x”, “State Hwy”, or “State Rte”
