I hadn’t seen that page before – as the red lettering indicates, I’m not sure we’ve ever settled on a naming convention for state routes. Thoughts?
Whether there’s been an official decision or not, the state routes I’ve seen follow the “State Rte” convention. I personally would prefer the “SR-xx” used in many other states because it’s easier, but that would mean eventually going back to change the bulk of the Ohio roads as they’re labeled now. We’d have to get a good consensus to do that, since it would probably involve more “re-do” work than it’s worth. Hopefully other editors will provide comments.

“Rte” pronounces as “route” with TTS, and “SR-” expands to pronounce as “state route”. From that perspective, standardizing on either one would provide the same aural guidance. I’ve always been in favor of using “SR”. In fact when I first started editing, I started changing roads to SR until mapcat stopped me. I wouldn’t be opposed to doing the work to change to “SR”. I also think that it cleans up the map display similar to using “I-” and “US-” does.
Also, it may be OCD of me, but since ODOT does not use the dash when referring to SRs, I don’t think we should either. Any release from ODOT shortening “State Route” goes w/o it as does all the new signage they are updating. Might as well be consistent…
We know that “SR-” is expanded to pronounce “state route”. I didn’t see an entry in GizmoGuy411’s big TTS spreadsheet, but I don’t know if "SR " would expand and pronounce correctly. TTS can be affected by a hyphen, so is anyone in a position to test that quickly?
I’m not in Ohio now but will try to remember to check that as soon as I can.
