Hi everyone. I’ve been poking around on the Alberta map after a drive north of Edmonton and I’ve noticed some inconsistencies in highway naming. Portions of certain roads are named “Hwy X” and then other portions are named “X Highway”.
Would I be correct to change all the areas I am capable of editing to “Hwy X” or is it possible there are different highway naming conventions in different areas of the map for some reason? (French language dominance in the area perhaps? Although the word “Highway” is still English so that probably isn’t it…)
(Also - can I apply for the ability to edit more of Edmonton or even Alberta in order to make more widespread changes or are all those positions currently filled? Would being granted those rights mean I’d have responsibilities beyond “not being a jerk when editing” or would my current style of just putzing around and correcting things that are obviously wrong still work OK?)
There’s a really simple explanation. The basemap import from the gov’t had all highways as “XX Highway” through Alberta. A number of us have been working to change them to “Hwy XX”… but there are a lot of highways to update!
So the correct answer is: PLEASE update any highway in Alberta to be of the form “Hwy XX”.
I believe you can apply – the process remains the same as it has – just fill out the Area Manager request form and go from there.
Your summary is correct – don’t be a jerk and pay attention to your forum inbox, in case a CM or Champ has an issue they need to bring up with you.
There aren’t a huge ton of us, and its taking me literally HOURS to fill in area manager requests to get all these darned highways fixed, so please, if you have time, jump in with that! I’ve started working outwards from the Lethbridge area int he south and the Grande Prairie area in the north.
Sounds good. I’ve been fixing up the area around Legal, AB after my trip there and I’ve been granted Area Manager (for Edmonton) so I have a nice 4-mile radius to work with now. It’s alarming how many Range Roads/Township Roads are marked 1-way or unknown. I’d hate to try to find someone’s farm using Waze as it currently stands!
What is the proper naming convention for road such as Deerfoot & MacLeod? Generally road signs would say something like “Exit to Deerfoot Trail North” NOT “Exit to Deerfoot Trail SE”. Same goes for MacLeod Trail, Glenmore, etc… OTOH, an address on MacLeod would be XXX MacLeod Trail SE/SW.
So what’s the best way to ensure the map reflects what drivers will see while also recognizing how addresses are given?
Can’t believe how far the Calgary map has some in just 3 months. When I joined in December there were no abbreviations at all (Street or direction) and the map was painful on a small iPhone screen. I started the change with about ~15,000 edits in a week but got burnt out. Thrilled to see someone picked it up.
I figured it was better to just go with it – it’s better than the common abbreviation of “Tr” as that isn’t on the Waze list.
It sounds like we have two different questions here, so I’m going to answer them separately.
roads need to be named what they are (i.e. including the quadrant direction (NE/NW/SE/SW, if that is part of the official address)
exits / ramps need to be named what the sign leading up to them says… even if that means the long “Exit 36: Hwy 1 W / 16 Ave N / Banff” or similar. This may mean you don’t put the quadrant in, but you do put the direction.
I’m glad someone noticed. There are a couple of tools that make it easier, but it is still very time consuming!
You can try to send a permalink of four outter corners of a larger rectangle. It has worked for some people, but I never had any success early on when I was trying to address this exact issue in Manitoba. I think this is the only way of going about doing this, other than doing thousands of permalinks - which I essentially had to result to.

I was personally leaving them as “Trail” in my little corner of the world – following the CP guideline. Is it general consensus to go with Trl instead? There’s a few of these that CP does NOT abbreviate that are in the waze list – i have been using the CP guidelines as my rule of thumb.
