Every edit I make now has to be approved.
Can someone tell me why this is as it seems to defeat the point of Waze?

It is so someone with more experience on how changes effect the drivers can review the edit request.
I recommend you post something in your local city/state/country forum to learn more about editing.
That was never the case previously, so why is it now?
I might as well just notify Google maps of since they have to be approved there as well.
I see you added a number of road segments a week ago. Is it possible you were trying to make changes outside of your editable area (1 mile around where you have driven)? Or changes to roads that are locked above your level?
