Sunpass/E-Pass (electronic tolls) only

I just ran into a situation where Navigation kept telling me to go to an exit marked Sunpass only. Obviously, if you don’t have a Sunpass or E-Pass electronic device, you cannot pay and the authority takes a photo of your license plate for getting their money.

I can’t find a setting to say that I do not have an electronic device or vice versa. When I lived here, I had the device, but that doesn’t help a whole lot, except that I knew not to go to that exit. Pity the person who has no clue.

Am I missing something?

Yes…you’re missing the signs that alert you 2 miles ahead of the actual toll of the lanes to merge to… Waze is not an auto-pilot

Is the Sunpass only restriction relayed in the name of the ramp in Waze? There was a similar situation in PA. We made sure it said EZ-Pass only in the ramp name to help, but the driver still needs to use their brain

I’m glad you feel the need to be rude. You make me glad I moved away from the state 4 years ago.

It is relayed as part of the name. There is no way anyone could remember all of them throughout this state, just as in any other state.

Of course, I just didn’t use the advice and I took an exit I knew wasn’t a problem. So far, I’ve seen a lot of bad advice but I’m hoping that it becomes better. However, this is my first week using it and I know that no navigation system is great. Telenav let me down in Fort Lee, NJ when I was a few blocks off my desired path. Thankfully, my memory works fairly well.

Sorry m’aam…a bit sensitive huh? No rudeness intended…just common sense.

I don’t think razor was intending to be rude, maybe a little sarcastic…

There are a few things that you need to remember…

  1. Like with any GPS/Navigation system it is the driver’s responsibility not to blindly follow the directions provided, but to use their common sense and not make illegal/unsafe maneuvers.
  2. Waze is primarily a commuter app, so it stands to reason that commuters will have their local electronic tolling system & therefore can use that ramp.
  3. While an “electronic tolling allowed” option would be nice to have, it’s a bit more complicated than you think. I have a NYS Thruway issued “EZ Pass”, while it is accepted most of the North East (https://www.e-zpassny.com/en/about/facilities.shtml), it is not accepted everywhere - and not in Florida, so Waze will need to develop a list of electronic toll system providers, a list of whose systems work together, and then let you pick your system in the app, assign the systems to road segments… Like I said, complicated…

Of course, it’s complicated, much like anything that works across 50 states. I suppose I’m asking too much of Waze. I’m not sure whether I’ll continue to use it or not. It seemed the drive to/from Orlando was a good experiment for the app.

I’ve hardly followed directions blindly, given that I know the area, some suggested routes just don’t seem to make sense. My best bet would be to turn off Toll Roads, since I no longer have the E-Pass device. Of course, on the Pennsylvania Turnpike/Garden State Parkway/NJ Turnpike, there was no such need since major toll plazas have people working them.

“Toll By Plate” (I think that’s what it’s called) won’t work for you? Do you just prefer to avoid the toll roads in general?

I believe that the app’s GUI can ask the user if he/she wants to use toll roads. Tom Tom GPS has that feature. But with the new Waze version 3.5.1.0 you can go to settings, navigation, then set avoid toll roads to on. That will take care of the issue, and no tolls for you (bousozoku).

That’s the simple version… The main issue here is “Paying Cash” vs “Paying by Electronic Transponder”. You pay the toll either way, but certain exits don’t have staff there to accept cash/make change/etc. You may be willing to pay the toll, but only want to use cash. Waze currently has not way to differentiate between Full Service Toll Booths & Electronic Tags Only aside from labeling the exit with a “SUNPASS ONLY”, “EZ PASS ONLY”, or similar notation.

Does your Tom-Tom have the ability to avoid “Electronic Tags Only” toll booths?

No, either you don’t or do navigate thru toll roads. Tom Tom ask the user, do you want to avoid toll roads? Y/N If you use the no option, either you have the transponder, have cash, or you want the pay by mail option (where they take a pic of your tag and mail you the bill, with extra charges, of course).

The Original Poster was OK with paying the toll, but doesn’t have the electronic tag, so can’t use the “Sunpass Only” exits. They were asking if there was a way for Waze to differentiate between staffed toll plazas and those restricted to those with the electronic tolls & route around the electronic only exits.

Thanks for everyone’s input on the matter.

I tried the navigation a few times in instances in which there wouldn’t be toll roads even close to necessary, and it directed me to toll roads. It was interesting behaviour. In Pennsylvania and New Jersey, I could understand it.

Then again, there were issues sitting at a stop light. It would ask me if I was in traffic, which I could only assume was a map issue. A “stop light” button added to the “yes” and “no” buttons would have helped there. Then, the map would rotate 90 degrees and then, another 90 degrees, facing me the other way, while still sitting at the red light.

It was interesting through Atlanta, and more helpful on I-75, in general, than on local roads. Getting alerts from 25 miles away seemed counter-productive.

I’ll take it off my phone and wait a year to try it again. Android was certainly much better after a year, so hopefully Waze will be, also.

Good luck to all of you.

There is still the issue when you are on a Toll Road, where you usually have the ability to pay in cash trough the “normal” tool booths, but then there are these E-Pass/Sunpass ONLY exits. It is not a matter of avoiding Toll Roads altogether, but avoiding these E-Pass/Sunpass ONLY exits…

There is another exit/toll booth type to consider in a perfect system (which Waze is not and will never be) – Exact Change Only. It is oh so fun to be driving on the Parkway late at night and get off at an exit which has two choices – EZ-Pass and Exact Change. It doesn’t matter that I have a stack of cash on me then. Add 10 minutes to my trip tearing the car apart to find 35 cents.

I know this is over a year since this post was created and commented on, but I’m going to add my observation here. Florida is doing away with the toll booths, at least in S Florida, and going to the electronic/camera system. I drove to Orlando 2 weeks ago and there are 2 places on the turnpike that have toll booths, but for the most part they’re gone on the major thoroughfare. Exits off of the turnpike still have the booths set up.
