I just saw in the Waze Blog a post about Waze supporting the road closures around the Boston Marathon (http://www.waze.com/blog/waze-wishes-boston-marathon-runners-good-luck-and-routes-drivers-safely-around-road-closures/). How was this accomplished? What the map edited and updated before and after the marathon? Is there a way to support preprogramed road closures? Will this feature be available for other major road events (i.e. other marathons, parades, etc)?
Yes. Soon*.
- soon is in Waze time, adjust accordingly.
Very cool…

I am not in Boston, but I suspect that in the Blog that Waze is simply referring to Wazers posting manual reports - which do not directly impact routing.
Waze Marketing at it’s best…
The short and simple answer is: yes we can!
The longer one:
We have a method in place that allows us to set segments as non-navigable in the system for a specific time frame.
The process that uses this method is being tested right now, so it is monitored closely whenever we use it, to make sure it blocks the segments properly, and navigation around them is not adversely affected.
We have used various versions of this process in cases like the 405 “Carmageddon” in LA.
So we may use it again, but as it is being tested, it is used only for road closures that we decide are appropriate to test with.
Thanks,
Ori
So Ori, are you saying that this process to make roads “non-navigable” was used for the Boston Marathon or are you just stating that the method to make a road “non-navigable” exists?
Hi,
We did use this method on the Boston marathon.
This method was used before, outside the US, but this tool is far from perfect yet.
Ori
That’s great. It would be helpful if there was some method set up where the community can request Waze to make roads no-navigable for certain events like this. Waze can have the final say so on whether to do it or not. Obviously Waze can’t be bothered with every small event.
London Olympics comes to mind. There are going to be a lot if road closures for the games along with the Olympic road network (for games vehicles only).

The Olympics have been under discussion in the UK forum for quite some time.
With still no input officially from Waze on their plans for it. Hint hint Ori lol

Unfortunately there is little to no discussion between UK Wazers and waze HQ!
