Taconic to Sprain in NY

Can someone level (6) or better add a little ramp to the start of the Sprain to match how the road is signed. I fixed a UR for a wrong exit earlier for the Exit to stay on the Taconic but can’t edit the Sprain. If you just want to unlock it I’ll be more than happy to make the change.

The ramp should read “to Sprain Pkwy S / New York City”

In case there are any questions:

Sorry, thought I posted it.

I had to work my way around the pesky level 6 lock (only Waze employees are level 6), but I got it.

Beautiful. The waze-force is strong in you.

I need that on a T-shirt

I see the Taconic changes from freeway to major highway. Is that intentional? Thanks.

Just south of the Sprain there are grade crossings on the Taconic. So that make Major sound right to me.

If it’s only Major Highway, how does that affect its importance on routing? If I’m in Albany, headed to Hopewell Junction, taking I-90 to 9 to the Taconic is shorter (mile-wise) and near equivalent (time wise) and no tolls. I set it to Freeway for that segment because it wasn’t an option when I asked Waze to give me other routes otherwise. Now, it’s an option, and with accurate time estimates too.

I realize at-grade crossings is part of the definition of Major Highway and contrary to the definition of Freeway, but I justify with these:

  1. Most intersections are not at-grade, and those that are have increasingly restrictive turn permissions.
  2. Working within the constraints of the router is the highest priority.

Freeway is preferred over Major Highway. By how much? I am not sure.

If there is a grade crossing, then it is not a Freeway. If there was one and only one grade crossing I could be convinced of bending the rules, but there are multiple signalized grade crossings.

I understand how that tweak may have helped your route, but also consider that there may be other people who would like to AVOID the Taconic and stick to true Freeways and the change to Freeway has inconvenienced them.

Another way to look at it is the functional classification maps from NYDOT. There are conversations in the NY and CT state forums talking about the Hutch and the Merritt and I think the consensus is leaning towards Major Highway even through there are no grade crossings because of DOT classifications.

In what way are they inconvenienced?

If the Taconic were forced to be the only option, I could see what you were saying. Keeping the Taconic off the list of options, however, serves no purpose. If we had shorter tile cycles, I’d be interested in seeing what other options there are, but while we work out the bugs in the new system, I would ask that we keep it as Freeway – again, to provide more options. A user is never inconvenienced when they can do something else.

The Taconic is going to have an average speed lower than I-87, so Waze will certainly keep that in mind. When they roll out the ability to avoid toll roads, maybe that’ll help Waze realize that the Taconic as a Major Highway will be a viable choice, but I don’t think we’re there yet. That said, I’ve had to slow down more for traffic merging from onramps on the Taconic than for anyone entering from at-grade intersections.

If I’m 60 minutes away from my destination and Waze wants me to take back roads to get to I-87 so I can take I-88 (?) to my destination for a sum total of nearly 2 hours, I’d call that an inaccurate route and I’d call that worse than an inconvenience.

I still believe that what we call roads is far less important than how we manipulate the router.

Come check out the United States forum. A new topic on Road Classifications has just started. I warn you, one of these pops up every 9 months or so in my experience over the past few years

I guess my concern is that tweaking the road type to get the right results may not be the right approach if the real problem is that the routing engine needs to be changed. Such as allowing lowering the penalty for Major Highways to make them a bit closer to a Freeway.
