I would love to be able to set a A to B test course in the map editor that would do a fake turn by turn navigation from point A to B. Then I would know 100% I was happy with my edits without having to wait for an update and go road test them. And if I was not happy I could re edit and try again, and be sure the edits made would give great directions in real life with less chance of errors until the next update once they were noticed.
It’s possible they can add this in the future. Right now, it isn’t possible due to the way the map editor data must be processed to work with the routing server code. At least, that’s our understanding. It doesn’t sound like this is a trivial matter and so will likely to take quite a long time, if ever, to get working.
It would sure be a great tool for accurate editing. I chalk mine up to learning but I am sure even seasoned editors make a change and drive it from time to time and go, that’s not how wanted that nav to verbally cue. I have had a few cases now where I think I have nailed it, go out and road test after the map updates, and its not perfect. Then I have to try again, wait for the sytstem to update, road test again, before I can know 100% its verbally a easy direction to comprehend and follow.
That’s a lot of extra driving if I am making a few detours here and there to ensure I have made correct changes for other drivers coming to and through my home town etc. For a company that is pitching Co2 reduction, editing and confirming without road testing would be a huge pitch in their favour.(no knock against them, I think this is a great system, but to me that would be a huge one)
You can test routing on the Livemap, with the Navigation Instructions addon script, from the comfort of your computer. Still need to wait for map updates though.
via mobile
Live map is oddly not updated though, in some cases I have noticed if you click around live map the road is there, but does not show its physically it being there. I was also kinda talking about a mock trip where a arrow would travel the map at average speed and give verbal directions. The verbal part is key for me, I want to make sure the edits I make in my area are easy to understand verbally,so people don’t have to look at the screen. I physically shut my screen off and test drive areas with turn by turn on and pretty much pretend I don’t know my area and see if Waze would get me to where I am needing to go, if it doesn’t I make changes and try again.
And with the livemap addon you can test for the turn info.
Thanks Alan and Tim, I have added that script I can’t seem to make it work for chrome, but does with firefox and greasemonkey. That will be handy for sure, checking pre update would be sweet, but this is very nice and at least saves a trip on the road to check in some cases post update.
Thanks in advance,
ChunkMonkey.
It works great in Chrome for me. Make sure the downloaded filename ends in exactly .user.js, dragging to an open extensions window. Then force reload the livemap page.
Sorted it out thx, I had DL’ed the file twice and was trying to install user(1).js and it wouldn’t work, found the original and it worked. Much better I prefer Chrome to FF.
