The Asian Highway Network - what to do with it?

Today I learned about this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_Highway_Network

It has a few roads going through Thailand. I haven’t seen it mentioned on the Waze map or the forum - should we map it? What should be the rules for mapping it?

It’s a question of a new name on an existing Hwy. So where to place the AHxx name?
Perhaps like this : (fictional example) Hwy 77 (AH 12) (Ekamai Rd)

I’d suggest using whatever the most common local signage is as the primary name, and then the others as alts.

Problem with alts is they’re in the background. They don’t show up on the map. This is perfect for navigation but this requires a navigationable map. Not sure Thailand has reached that level, yet.
That’s why I’m not so glad with non visible information.

I accidentally found one marked near Udon Thani as “Hwy 2 - AH12 - Mittraphap”. That doesn’t really fit with the existing suggestion: “Hwy 2 (Mittraphap)”

How important is the Asian Highway network? Do they ever talk about “the AH12”? And international drivers? Because I know there are european roads like that, but in my country nobody seems to use those numbers (maybe truck drivers.)

I don’t know anyone who uses them by the AH name. Number of “name” is most common. Let’s leave it off until a local editor comes in and says that people actually refer to them by that name or that the signage is common.

Seems like waste to take it off of roads that have it already. What do you think?

Problems I see with leaving it:

  • It makes the already lengthy road names even longer when listening to TTS or trying to read at the top of the app, and makes it that much harder as now you’re looking for one of 3 names on signage. (and from what I’ve seen the AH # rarely appears on primary signage)
  • It doesn’t comply with the settled highway naming system. So we’re going to have to edit those segments anyway. Plus we need to figure out how to handle combining 3 names in the primary name field. <Hwy # (common name / asian highway number)>? Something else? Will we change the notation for how we are currently handling the dual naming, and go back and change again all the segments already brought into wiki compliance?

Good points.

New development with regard to Asian Highways:
In a cooperation with other Asian countries we are trying to work out a mutual naming style which will be used in all countries where AH roads are present.
When all countries use an identical naming structure this will help with very long-distance routing.
The discussion isn’t finalised yet. Stay tuned for further news.
