I’m curious if there has been any development and/or thoughts with U-turns. From what I gather I understand that generally U-turns are not recommended unless it can be done safely and without much effort for the Wazer (e.g. From a turn lane with a turn signal). A well known editor told me that U-turns work on the WME but not on the App yet, but there is development with the app to allow them when using the App Navigation. Was curious if it’s been activated yet.
I ask because I have noticed tons of intersections (especially in SF) that have U-turns allowed (Using the WME ToolBox features (cyan dots)). As an SF resident I can tell you it’s generally much easier to go around the block than to make a U-turn (narrow streets, small driveways and such)… I have half a mind to disallow these U-turns but thought I’d get some input before I do that, especially if someone is testing something.
If you see a U-turn enabled on a segment where you know that it would be unsafe, impossible, or just a bad idea for Waze to route, don’t hesitate to disable it. At major intersections, I’d suggest inquiring with an experienced editor, unless of course, U-turns are legally prohibited there, in which case, the answer is obvious. It’s also not a bad idea to look at the modification date of the segment, and note who edited it last. If you see something recent, and done by a level 3 or higher editor, it might be something that was done intentionally. Those of us who are Area or Country Mangers have essentially volunteered to help with questions. Private messages are welcome, and we’ll tell you if you should just have at it and use your own judgement on an issue.
Common sense is helpful here. If there’s a junction in the middle of a block, for no other reason than it being on a city borderline, obviously, there’s no reason to have U-turns enabled. I see a lot of those. A right angle corner, where one street makes an L into another, would also often be a bad place for Waze to suggest a U-turn. Intersections with alleys also should not usually allow U-turns. It sounds, from your original post, like you have a good grip on this.
