Hello,
today, in France, they activate the first average speed radar. Someothers will be put in place soon.
The system is one radar at one point and an other radar 2 kms after, the system calculate the average speed.
It would be great if Waze could have this feature, for instance the road could be ‘painted’ in orange (or what ever) to tell the driver this road is under average speed control. It’s an idea, others are welcome ! The aim is to be alerted !
Best regards.

Yes, I confirm,
first average radar speed in France so It could be very usefull to integrate this kind of radar in Waze.
How does the system tell the difference between cars passing the devices (to know who gets the ticket)? And how does the radar know it’s picking up a reflection from a specific car and not the truck next to/behind it (radar guns typically use the largest return - i.e. the truck)?
I think first radar (cam I think) takes plate number and associated time
Second cam takes plate number and associated time.
The distance is known so it only stays to substract times and calculate speed.
If problem like plate not known by both radar, it is your lucky day.
By installing many cams on first point and also in second point system is able to take all lines and many cars in the same time.
So i think it is not radar but cam.
Sorry for my poor english…

So it’s not really a Radar, but a license plate reader / time elapsed over known distance math problem… Interesting…
Yes. In france system is already used for automatic toll without stoping when leaving a motorway.

Drive in front of a large truck when passing the cam gates 8-). Works beautiful in the Netherlands (we have a couple of those things).
These are still just speed cameras using more technology to catch you. I’d say use the existing speed cams. They have the exact same functionality/outcome: your speed is measured and if it exceeds a threshold, you get a fine/ticket.
I’m experimenting with FTW policetrap Events for these in The Netherlands…
The use of camera is confirmed.

Many countries already use this kind of radar (cam) :
Belgium, UK, Italy and deutchland
In France the first system installed today can be used from 150 meters to many kilometers.
This is MESTA 5000 Smart. It is not already homologate but it will be in august. Up to this date, it works only for tests.

The MESTA 5000 SMART can store and analyse up to 2400 vehicules for each line and per hour (so it is confirmed too that one cam is used by line on each side).
When you exceed average speed, a picture of your car is taken.
50 similar systems will be installed in France before the end of 2012.
New type of camera it is it tack controller. It should have a different symbol then the other cameras.
So we der One we can identify them as track controllers.
In Belgium they are active as well
They map the time of the car passing the frist row of camera’s(each lane one comera) and when you pas the second row. It calculates distence over time.
Please make this a update and fast.

They are speed cameras, plain and simple.
Why use something that is already there and works when you can distract Waze into adding yet another feature that is not needed? :o All of this when ignoring the current features that still are not ‘finished’ or don’t work properly?
Yes and No. They are speed cameras, alright, but they are special cameras that don’t only monitor one spot one the road but whole segments. The article linked by glenan56 mentions that the two elements (i.e. the camera and the radar device) can be miles apart. I guess most drivers’ reaction is to slow down to regular speed when seeing a speed trap and then re-accelerate after passing the trap. So when you only report the initial control point of these new devices, these drivers will be screwed. When you only report the endpoint of the speed control, it won’t make things any better.
So I think this next generation of speed traps is something we should spend one ore two thoughts on. Though urgency is probably not too high, e.g. I haven’t heard of these thingies in Germany yet, but the article says that they are in use over here as well…

I’d have thought that the signs by the road would be sufficient warning for motorists…

No. You forget that sat nav systems absolve the user of all responsibility for their actions. If the sat nav says turn right and the signage says otherwise then it’s obvious the real world signage is at fault. [sarcasm]
So you can guess I agree with you

In the Netherlands, there are no signs by the road for this. You just have to keep your average speed on a couple of km stretch under the limit.
There is an item on uservoice you can vote on, to implement this kind of trap.
Hello,
Is it planned an update Waze integrating radar section?
Because they will very quickly be deployed in France and in many other European countries such as Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands or Swiss.

We should be able to report the first and then the second radar to warn of the end of the section monitored by a specific color flashing (like yellow)!

Please read the rest of the thread before posting exactly the same question!
We have these in the UK, existing speedcam reporting works adequately, no need to rush to add anything new.
As an aside, I hate these things but my they are effective!

I don’t think such, and other previous messages feel the same way …
Take a look to verify if they are effective:
