في 21 مايو 2017 تم طرح موضوع تسمية المدن في السعودية للمناقشة على مجموعة من المصممين في تطبيق
Google Hangouts
وتم خلال هذه المناقشة الاطلاع على أساليب التسمية في عدة دول والبحث عن أفضل الممارسات، والبحث في ما إذا كان إضافة الاسم باللغة العربية فقط فيه ضرر على المستخدمين. وتم الأخذ بالاعتبار امكانية الاستفادة من نتائج بحث جوجل في البحث عن أي مدينة في ويز بأكثر من لغة. اتفق المصممون (وعددهم 7 هم من مؤسسي مجتمع المصممين في السعودية ومديروا مساحات متفقرقة في السعودية) على أن يتم الاعتماد على اللغة العربية فقط في تسمية المدن في مصمم خرائط ويز؛ وذلك للأسباب التالية.

1- إضافة الاسم باللغة العربية فقط سيحقق مبدأ البساطة الذي تعتمد عليه ويز في التسمية.
2- إضافة الاسم باللغة العربية فقط يمنع تداخل أكثر من لغة ويمنع أن يكون الاسم طويل جدًا.
3- يمكن الاعتماد على ميزة نتائج بحث جوجل في البحث عن أي مدينة داخل السعودية باللغة الإنجليزية، وكذلك البحث عن أي مدينة في العالم بأي لغة يفضلها الباحث.
4- اقتصار مصمم خرائط ويز على حقل واحد فقط وعدم دعمه لإدخال عدة ترجمات لاسم المدينة.
5- اللغة العربية هي اللغة الأم في السعودية، وغالب سكان السعودية إما أنها لغتهم الأم أو أنها لغتهم الثانية

English subject: new local policy to allow cities in Arabic only in WME

On May 21st, 2017 a discussion has been risen on the issue of naming cities in Saudi Arabia among some of the very first founders of the community of editors in Saudi Arabia (some are area managers and country managers) on a Google Hangouts group. During this discussion, we researched how different countries name their cities, and what are the best practices in this manner. We also experimented whether naming cities in Arabic only would have significant negative impact on the user experience, here in Saudi Arabia. We also considered how helpful is Google result for searching for cities in Saudi Arabia. and We agreed to Allow names to be added and displayed in Arabic only based on the following reasons:

1- Adding city names in Arabic only will respect the simplicity principle which Waze relays on in its products.
2- Adding city names in Arabic only prevents cluttering the name, making the name very long, and having possible unwanted duplicates created for the same city.
3- The Google results feature in Waze App is a good and reliable resource for searching for any city in the world with any preferred language, and it has proved to work very good in Saudi Arabia.
4- Because there is only one filed for the city name in WME in the address section, and Waze has not supported adding translations of city names yet.
5- Arabic is the local language of Saudi Arabia, and most citizens either speak Arabic natively or as a second language.

Hello everyone,

In my humble opinion I believe that the community as such is the one that must choose what language will be used for the editions on the map, for now the number of editors is not as broad as if it is the territory.

Therefore I think it is good that Arabic is used as the first language and in the alternative English, to boost the use of the app and attract new publishers who collaborate with their knowledge of the territory.

Those who do not understand the language can focus on editing leaving the door open to future local editors.

I agree that the local KSA editing community should choose the primary language used for their country.

Maybe you could consider entering English names as secondary names, allowing expats and visitors to have an easier time finding places?
