Trinity House Lane, Hull - Should it be restricted?

Hi folks,

Earlier today Waze tried to take me down this street which is a Pedestrianised Zone, with access only Midnight-11am, 4pm-Midnight:

Currently is is restricted to all vehicles between 11am and 4pm in WME, which I guess does strictly follow the signage, but in my opinion it should be a pedestrian boardwalk, or have restrictions for all vehicles at all times to prevent drivers being routed this way, the reason being it is a heavily pedestrianised area, many of the cafes and bars have tables out in the street. Basically, it’s common sense not to drive down there unless you’re making deliveries, so I think Waze shouldn’t even try and route you this way, if you read the signs at the top of this street you’ll know that you only go down this street if you really need to be there.

I know Hull well enough that I didn’t go that way, but someone who doesn’t know their way around might find themselves in a pickle if they try and follow the route.

The adjoining street, Whitefriargate which is protected by the same access restrictions, but this is a Pedestrian Boardwalk:

Perhaps Trinity House Lane could be the same?

I’ve made Trinity House Ln a private road. That will prevent Waze routing anybody through.

However, I think the restrictions are the wrong way round. At the moment, they’re set to prohibit routing between 4pm and 11am, ie no vehicles overnight. I think the signs read No Vehicles except for access Midnight to 11am and 4pm to Midnight. I read that to mean that vehicles are not allowed at all between 11:00 and 16:00, but can access, eg for deliveries, between 16:00 and 11:00, ie overnight.

I don’t want to change that if I’m misreading it as I don’t know the area at all.

Whitefriargate should be set the same.

Thoughts?

You’re right about the times, access is between Midnight and 11am and 4pm to Midnight, so I’ve changed the restriction from 4pm-11am to 11am-4pm.

I always get caught up in the debate about whether to put restrictions on the road or restrictions on the turn, so I’m not always 100% sure how to restrict roads. How does the private road setting work? Does it put a higher penalty on the road?

Whitefriargate and Trinity House Lane are both very rarely used by vehicles these days unless it’s a delivery vehicle or a council vehicle, but I agree that they are all part of the same sort of road network and so should have the same attributes. The attributes should be such that Waze doesn’t attempt to route any drivers down there unless they specifically need to be there, like I said it is now very heavily pedestrianised often with lots of street furniture, signs, tables, etc.

I never use turn restrictions to replicate segment restrictions - the road restrictions are obvious (using Highlight) without needing to select the segment, whereas turn restrictions are only visible when you’ve selected the segment.

Private roads are only routed to if the destination is on that road, or can only be accessed by traversing the segment (eg to a second road on a private estate). That’s as absolute as not being routed along a restricted segment when the restrictions are in effect.

Making them private roads with time restricted access will ensure Waze only routes drivers there if they have to access an property along them. Problem resolved!

It sounds a little bit obvious, but restrictions on turns are only needed where a turn is restricted, not a segment. An example might help. :slight_smile:

This is the junction of Cheyne Walk and Battersea Bridge in London. As you come along Cheyne Walk from the west, the right turn onto Battersea Bridge is forbidden from 7am-7pm. However, traffic coming along Beaufort St from the north is allowed to go straight across onto Battersea Bridge at all times. This is a situation where you should restrict the turn, as only one route onto Battersea Bridge has restrictions.

If, on the other hand, Battersea Bridge was bus-only, no matter which direction you approach from, then a restriction on the segment would be far better. It’s less work than applying 3 separate turn restrictions and it’s much more obvious on the map, particularly if you use a script that highlights restricted segments. If it had 3 turn restrictions, you’d have to select every approaching segment in turn to see the restrictions, plus examine each restriction to see if they were the same.

Could someone with level 3+ please look at the restrictions on Carr Lane?

While I’m at it and knowing Hull as well as I do I’d like to make sure this is correct - the selected segments in real life are Buses and Cycles only. Has this been set correctly in Waze?

OK, sorted. The restrictions were all the wrong way round. A ticked box means that Waze won’t route that vehicle type along that road, even if it knew what the vehicle type was. At the moment, there’s no way of telling the app what you’re driving, and not expected in the near future, not even a Waze “soon”!
