TTS Abbreviation - Highway = Hwy

Is Hwy a valid abbreviation in the UK? eg. “A45 - Small Heath Hwy”
https://www.waze.com/en-GB/editor/?env=row&lon=-1.85465&lat=52.46276&zoom=5&segments=122566214

I note it’s not listed on the UK Wiki page, but I would expect plenty of URs on this main road if it wasn’t correct so I assume it is working OK. Anyone know for sure?

I’m not sure Hwy will work.

As we all know, Waze has recently switched from Nuance voices to Google. There’s a trick you can use to test Google voice:

  • Search for “translate” in Google
  • Type some text in the LH box - eg “turn left on Andover St”
  • When the text appears in the RH box, click the speaker icon
I find that several “standard” Waze abbreviations work - but Hwy is pronounced H-W-Y.

For that matter, I seem to recall seeing a few complaints about mis-pronunciation of Hwy from other countries. But since we don’t “officially” use it, I didn’t pay much attention.

Thanks for the tip Iain - I have corrected the offending segments now.

“Hwy” is not pronounced as “Highway” in Ireland.
