Two questions: Side of street and reporting road closures

Hi, I’ve been using Waze for 10 years now and have been a Royalty Wazer for most of that time. This year I started doing delivery jobs and have two questions:

1 - Waze puts the location icon right in the middle of the road. I had to use Google Maps on one delivery and found that it tells me what side of the road the location is on which is VERY helpful with all the poorly identified house numbers I run into. Is this something Waze can do?

2 - Since I’m driving in a lot of the same areas, I’m often being routed through the same streets. A few near me have been undergoing construction for several months and Waze keeps wanting to send me down roads that are closed. I keep reporting that the road is closed, but this doesn’t seem to stick and, later in the day, Waze wants to send me through the same closure! Why aren’t my closure reports sticking around?

Thanks!

Craig B.

Wow! That’s an impressive streak. I wish I could send you a bumper sticker or something. For now, I’ll just say: keep up the good work!

Hopefully I can get you some satisfying answers to your good questions. Here goes:

It actually depends on a few things:

  • If you’re a professional or gig driver, I’m guessing that your using another app to receive assignments and this 3rd Party App is sending Waze, at best, an address, but more than likely a set of latitude and longitude queried from Google. When Waze receives a lat/lon pair, it usually means we can’t determine left or right side of the road. This is also usually the case if you use voice commands to search for a destination.
  • But, if you delay your departure to your next destination and type in a destination address, it’s possible you’ll get a an address from Waze’s own database of house numbers, and then Waze will announce if your destination is on the left/right.
  • However, If you’re navigating to a named Place or address off a parking lot, Waze may not say which side of the parking lot road it is on. Also, if you don’t use voice instructions, you may not be notified of the side of the road.

This one is more straight forward, closures reported from the app impact your route immediately, and usually redirect other users for about an hour. However, they do not last all day. Similarly, a blocked lane report goes out immediately to other Wazers.
To report a longer lasting closure, you’ll need to contact the local volunteer editing community. The local editors have the ability to add closures in real-time, and schedule when they should end, whether hours or months in the future. Similarly, they can schedule closures to recur on a routine basis if needed. You can reach out in your country or state’s forum here, or join the local discord chat server if you’re here in the US. Otherwise, just use the REPORT > MAP ISSUE function in the mobile app and type out all the details using the app on your phone including:

  • the impacts street(s)
  • the expected duration
  • the cause

Thanks for the replies! For the last two months I’ve switched to being a Walmart Spark driver (after six months as a Gopuff driver) and their app must send lat/lon since it actually pinpoints the location and not the general address (especially for apartment complexes which is VERY helpful!). Unfortunately, for some reason their driver app does not allow you to long-press and copy the address, so I’d have bounce back and forth to add it in manually. Oh well! Maybe if it could show the house numbers around the location… I spend too much time running around trying to find house numbers!

I hear that. When delivering for Flex it’s the same thing. Always trying to find the right address for the package. There is a suggestion in the official Waze suggestion box which might fit what you’re looking for. If not, search around and see if something else is a better fit. When a suggestion hits a certain threshold, Waze HQ will review it for development in the app.
