Unlock request: Roads in Tung Chung and Chek Lap Kok Airport. Reflection on Waze's current status in Hong Kong

For some reason, the power of editing many primary streets in Tung Chung and Chek Lap Kok Airport has been restricted to level 3 users. As a level 1 user who lives in the area, I wish I could update outdated navigation cues, but the restriction disallows the realisation of my intent. I want to request an unlocking of those restricted roads in the two areas so I can update the road signs promptly when there is no obvious threat of vandalism.

Outdated navigation has increasingly been a problem of Waze in Hong Kong in recent years. People are more inclined towards the Gaode map (from mainland China) to navigate around the city, where the navigation cues are updated more frequently because the map provider hires staff to maintain the data, but Waze relies on volunteers. While the number of active editors in Waze from Hong Kong does not cease to fall, the issue would only deteriorate.

For instance, ever since the launch of the ZMB programme, HZMB usage has been unprecedentedly high, but Waze does not provide any useful data regarding the road. The speed limits are wrong; the lane directions are not marked clearly; the locations of speed cameras are not labelled. Frankly, also a ZMB holder, I prefer to use the counterpart - Gaode - for cross-border navigation, even when my destination is just the border, where navigation data in other territories are not required throughout my trip because Gaode provides all the details that Waze does not. I joined Waze Map Editor with the initial intent to enrich the map data along the entire bridge but then realised the power of Level 1 forbids my goal. So, I decided to edit other places to meet the criteria for higher levels; still, it would take several months to attain it. I think the community should start considering promoting reliable active users to a higher level with more editing power that would encourage the on-time updates of the map data in Hong Kong before Waze is replaced by its other counterparts.

First of all, welcome to Waze editing in HK. Please provide permalinks to the problematic road segments, I will downlock to L1 for your editing.

Needless to say, the rank system is to prevent vandalism. I’m sure you hear about a lot of secondary schools being renamed in Google Maps just two days ago.

However, since you manage to find your way here, I trust that you want to edit with good intent. Even with good intent, new editors can also unintentionally break the map as they are not familiar with using Waze Map Editor (commonly known as WME). The ranking and locking system is there to protect the hundreds and thousands of drivers out there using the mobile app daily.

As country manager of Hong Kong (China), I don’t have the permission to level up you quickly. The ranking system is a global policy. It takes time and effort for you to make progress. It also takes time for you to learn how to use the editor and make edits that aligns with the global best practice (Waze is a global app, while we can locally decides some mapping standards of our own, we also need to make sure the global best practice is followed)

What I could do is to downlock the problematic map segments to L1 temporarily, so you can make edits on those segments you don’t normally have permission to. For those changes you can’t save immediately, the save button will become a submit to review button, and higher ranks editors can review you edits and approve them. Feel free to discuss here or to send me private chat message (icon on top right).

Please send here the permalinks of the segments you think is wrong or requires updates, I will down-lock them to L1.

As for ZMB, I am fully aware that the speed limits and lanes are very wrong there. I’m not a ZMB holders myself, I think none of the editors here are. Also, without Google Street View in China, we don’t know the exact position where the speed limit changes. We are also not allowed to use other street views (such as Baidu map’s street view) due to copyrights issue. If you can update the ZMB, we are more than welcome to have your contribution. When you drive on ZMB next time, please report a UR (update request) from the app and we can update speed limit change based on the GPS location of your report. However, please be reminded to focus on driving safely as no 1 priority. Only use mobile app when it’s safe to do so.

As for map in China, as both a user and editor myself, I can only say, Gaode is doing a very good job. It would take Waze a long long way to catch up. What’s worse, Waze Map Editor is unavailable in China (as the login page requires Google sign in and they can’t access Google, or they just can’t get thru the Google reCaptcha, I forgot). Without much help from local Chinese editors, our map in China is heavily outdated from the latest development of Chinese map.

Let’s just focus on HK first and make HK map better. There should be more than enough work for us to do already. :stuck_out_tongue:

I do have ZMB, I will try to update the speed limit at the right places.
