Unmarked town

Giday Wazer’s

I have come across a town that I’m updateing street names, and come across Walla Walla, which to Waze don’t exist!!
I’ve gone through the forum looking to see if someone has come across this before but found nothing that matches this.
I’ll keep going for now, with leaving the no city box checked, and come back to it in the future.
Any thoughts ???
thanks

Do you have a permalink?

Just add ‘Walla Walla’ in the city field for roads inside the city limits. Waze will then know about it after the next tile update

PS. Check the chat window in the editor [emoji6]

Walla Walla added.

There has been a change in how/who can add new city names, please check out this thread on Restrictions on creating new city names from the UK

???

This is quite true and will most likely be activated in the next wme release. This change by Waze came about as many newer editors were still incorrectly labelling city names and causing new smudges or inconsistencies to the established maps. The general consensus from most country GC’s was a restriction of city names is for Level-3 editors and higher, however some countries chose a higher level due to their own internal issues. We were going to post a sticky in the forum when we had confirmation from Amit. Australia & New Zealand will be restricted to Lvl-3 editors and up. Seems like Waze have moved their plans again.

I’m neutral but…

In New Zealand…

Editors above level 1 are 99.9% From the main cities and 99% of them are from the north Island.

When I map the south Island I use street signs and don’t use maps to copy…without local knowledge how should one know the city name…

…I suspect this applies to Australia as well??

Unless one just copies from Google Maps???

But in principle its a good idea

Government mapping of localities is decent enough here in QLD that there is no need to expect Google to get it right.

I sent an email to waze about this and there was a semi reply

They said we could use all data from inside WME e.g. street view

But there was no reply about using Government data

From my understanding you are free to use Government data for private use but not commercial use like waze.

Looks like I will need to do another follow up email

My personal understanding was Waze has knowns low level copyright infringement happens but they turn a blind eye to it.

This view has changed with the removal of the Google button on WME tools

Can you post which government data you believe is ok to use? I use that as an example in my email to Waze

Thanks

That’s what I was after

Just to muddy the waters a little more

ps_au sent me a PM

If this is the case…

I’ve requested an link to this data.

and also asked for the original source of this data

I haven’t had a reply yet

But I suspect that ps_au is talking about?

https://wiki.waze.com/wiki/Community_Plugins,_Extensions_and_Tools#WME_Highlighter_City

https://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=819&t=78774

and the data is found here

http://members.aon.at/aneumeister/scripts/waze/Australia.txt

I suspect that this data has been sourced by a community member, I suspect that there are many sources that this data could have come from.

Legal?

I think I need to ask Amit?

It wont be that list. Wazr staff were very specific in saying the. Information had to be public domain. That list looks like one from a script, so most likely not provided by Waze. You would need to talk to the author of that script AlexN-114 and where he obtained that info. Best to wait to hear back from Waze staff as to what their source was. Don’t speculate.

You have this list then?

Was/is there a copyright status with this list?

Can you post it publicly?

Isn’t it a problem if the script is wrong and people are using it?

Quite possibly if the Suburb information sourced is copyright by another entity. That is something you need to question with the author of that script. That’s not for me to make that call. I’ve never used that script, so I couldn’t tell you.

Two possible problems with that script.

  1. Are the suburbs accurate? e.g. are we inducing error into the WME because of it?

  2. Is it legal

At the very least I believe the Author should list the source and any relevant copyright if any.

When I have time i’ll send a PM to the Author

I’m slowly getting the answers
