US89 Closure Not Reported

UDOT and multiple agencies, including Google and Apple Maps, is reporting the closure of US 89 in Davis County due to a SWAT standoff. This closure is absent on Waze and Waze is continuing to route folks through the area.

Thanks for the message. I put a closure on 89 between Antelope and South Weber Dr this morning, hearing that news on KSL, but set it to expire at noon hoping the standoff would be over by then. Looking now, I see traffic on 89 on UDOT’s cameras, so I think the situation is over now.

To add to this…you can add a closure using the app when you’re at the location. Tap the report button then Closure. Select the direction that is closed. Choose duration and reason, then submit.

Gotcha. I’m most concerned that a closure had been present for hours before I intended to travel that route but no one had reported it yet. There’s certainly no question that other wazers had already encountered the blockage but no one had gone to the next step as you detail.

I must say that I am much less likely to rely on Waze to give me up to date routing after noting the other legacy apps had the info available and factored into their route calculations long before I pointed out the omission here. :man_shrugging:

Sometimes we can get things early if we happen to be monitoring social media and news. That’s what Travis did in this case and put the closure in. He only put the closure in for a couple of hours - there is no way he could have known it would be a 5 hour stand off.

Waze is only going to be as good as the information provided by other wazers. In-app closures will give the earliest indication for unannounced closures.
