I’ve been using WAZE for about 2 or 3 months and it’s been fine. In the past week or so, I’ve had problems with the app not being able to find me. Sometimes it says “GPS NOT FOUND” and it approximates my location. When I’m in an unknown area, this can be disastrous. It will then find me, but then show me my speed at 0 and continue to not find me. So basically it finds me once a minute or so and shows me a static image of my icon where I am (was).
The very first day I had Waze, I was able to see other users’ icons traveling to and fro on the streets, to the point where I could positively correlate icons with actual vehicles in reality. Ever since then, I’ll see an icon in front of me, but as I move closer my car icon passes right through them becuase their icon never moved.
Thanks for the icon issue info. I wish there was a way to turn your own location on/off so people could opt in or out whether they’d like to be seen live or not.
The other issue is not hardware nor bad location because this worked fine for months until this week. Interference I can’t speak to. All I know is that it’s aggravating. I’m about to go on a trip this weekend. It’ll be interesting to see if it continues.
The beta has an “invisible mode” which can accomplish that. It isn’t very testable yet, so I cannot speak to its functionality. As for the GPS issue, if there is an app which can give you current location info along with signal strength, satellite count, and especially the margin of error, that would help rule out GPS in general. Waze doesn’t really do anything with GPS except take the data coming from the OS.
I had the GPS not found issue bite me twice last week. Both times first thing in the morning while leaving a hotel so I really needed to know where to go. The two times were 5 or 6 days apart. I’d have good location, then it would freeze, then no GPS message, then map would jump to the nearest cell tower based location, then it would snap to my true location, it would track for a few seconds, then repeat.
