Variable speed limits

According to various searches, Waze does not support variable speed limits. The map editor guidelines require that the speed camera be posted with its highest speed limit. The fundamental flaw here is that someone could be driving at 70mph in a variable speed limit that has reduced to 40mph and not get a warning from Waze. Surely it would be more sensible to map cameras in variable speed limits at zero so that you always get a warning?

The only flaw is that people forget that it is solely the responsibility of the driver to obey traffic laws.

The speed limit could be as low as 20mph.

I am not sure you would want every variable speed limit to notify you all the time?

If the speed drops to below 70mph the driver needs to take some responsibility in reducing their speed to match.

However if travelling at 70mph for long periods of time, it is easy to perhaps suddenly find yourself in excess of this.

As a result you might prefer to be told about a speed camera then.

If however you are driving at 70mph when it drops to 40 mph then you ought to be more aware of the signage imho.

variable speed limits change so often, for example when i travel to manchester via the m62 in the morn, 1 gyratory will show 60 then the next will show 60, then 40, then 50, then 60 etc etc, i don’t think waze currently has the infrastructure to support this. if you wish you can post your suggestion here or upvote any previous one - https://waze.uservoice.com/ also as the others have said, its the driver’s responsibility to follow traffic laws. imho the signs are so clear to what the speeds are if the variable speed limit is on. if you can’t follow basic traffic laws maybe driving isn’t it …

It is also solely the responsibility of the driver to avoid hazards, drive to the conditions etc. You are also not allowed to touch your phone whilst driving even if fixed to the dash under the new legislation so if we take this premise, all of the features of Waze bar navigating you from A to B are completely redundant. Like all things in Waze, it is just useful information.

Personally I would prefer to be told about all cameras within a variable speed limit. Perhaps it would be a simple improvement to add an option in the settings to warn all the time? I was under the impression that the developers monitor this forum but perhaps not?

Agreed they do change often. Road angel devices have the ability to know the speed limit in force. I believe this is through some sort of API into the national network. Appreciate Waze is unlikely to pursue this development for the UK given the relatively small portion of the market. That said I’m sure I read on the internet the google maps does have this ability. I like waze though because of the other features and the large community. Feels like the option to warn of all cameras would be an easy implementation. Thank you for link suggestion, that is useful. Last comment not so much.

(1) we all want more and new features, i certainly do! some will say, waze should not be telling the driver everything, tbh this might be because of my young age, i feel due to how technology is becoming so important in our daily lives and being so powerful with advanced languages, the additions of new features which may seem “basic” aren’t so. due to uk poor conditions and councils not having the resources to fix issues such as lane markings, potholes etc etc. i would be a nice touch to have more road features shown in waze even if its a visual effect like a tesla for example but make it user configurable (changeable in the settings to the users preferences). (2) currently the waze staff are aware of this speed camera announcement issue (which has been a bug for a long time), as currently, you will only receive an document if you go over the speed limit on the waze speedo (normally 2-3mph difference but tbh is the actual speed of the car). we don’t know when they will fix this but a lot of people keep mentioning this, so we’ll just have to keep waiting until that day. (3) there has been an announcement to potentially require highways england to show live gyratory speed limits in the future, but i haven’t heard any news regarding this, so if this does get approved and they are forced to do this, then i am sure waze will implement this via the api.

The solution would be to have an option in the app to always give a verbal and visual warning for speed cameras regardless of speed on approach…something users request all the time but hasn’t been adopted. Instead we got speed bumps.

Thanks for your post. I don’t want to sound dismissive but your request is very personal. Not everyone will want an audible alert for every camera. Imagine setting your cruise control at 70 and there is no change in the variable limit. You are not speeding but you are then getting an alert every time for miles and miles. For me, that would get annoying and it wouldn’t take long before I zoned out of the sound of it.

The solution, as others have said, is to have the ability to turn it on or off like you can for all the other alerts in Waze. That would put this debate to bed and we wouldn’t have to spend hours changing all the variable speed cameras throughout the country (not that we would ever get a unanimous vote on doing that anyway).
