Wales change from 30mph to 20mph speed limits

I thought it might be useful to start a thread on this to store information about this process, although perhaps it should be in the Wiki somewhere?
In brief, from 17 September 2023:
“This legislation changes the default speed limited on restricted roads. These are generally residential or busy pedestrian streets with streetlights.
But not all 30mph roads are restricted roads, and these remain at 30mph, and will be signed.”

The Welsh Government FAQ is here

The Gwynedd implementation page is here and the map of their plans here

This is going to be a jolly lot of work!!!

Oh, at least we have a map of Gwynedd. We need to find similar maps for the other council areas.

This is something that’s approaching over the horizon at great speed over my way, too. Buckley, just up the road from me, was one of the pilot areas for this scheme - Flintshire council handled it reasonably well (surprising, given their usual level of competence), but back then it was just one town and its surrounding villages. Time will tell how they handle the avalanche of speed limit changes in September. The other LAs around here are unknown quantities in this regard - but hopefully they’ll be better and more communicative than Wirral council have been since they brought in a similar scheme earlier this year, and have flat out refused to respond to any communication since then!

There is a centralised map (link below) for all of Wales although it does not have data from every council yet … including Gwynedd!?
It does looks like many of them are still working through the exceptions process to raise TROs for roads that will remain at 30mph, which also means it’s going to be quick hard to manage any bulk updates for this.

Good time to be in the road sign business though

Looks like three councils not showing on that map.

Gwynedd: https://cyngorgwynedd.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=fa13613a96e347c59d09bf59f53644a5
Conwy: None

Conwy have e-mailed me a list of exemptions, and have said that they’ll be updating the map shortly.

Not sure where the last 2 months have gone but the time is upon us.

With the 20mph limit taking effect on Sunday 17th (and I assume at 00:00) then we can start making changes on Saturday after the overnight map update.
There’s absolutely a lot of updates required but please remember it’s not a blanket change as “not all 30mph roads are restricted roads, and these remain at 30mph”

EDIT: Corrected days above so I don’t confuse anyone else!

https://datamap.gov.wales/maps/roads-affected-by-changes-to-the-speed-limit-on-re/view#/ has a list of all the 30mph roads not changing to 20mph

And Sunday’s the 17th

D’oh! Yes, I’m a day out.

Is there any particular area you’re familiar with Andrew? We don’t want to be tripping over each other’s work…

South West, so mainly Cardiff, Caerphilly, Rhondda but happy to contribute anywhere if I have time.

20mph: Wales speed limit sat-nav warning ahead of change

Why does that almost feel like a challenge?!

“Some GPS firms say map updates might not be immediate” - you don’t say!
@berowaz and @kevintiobraid have areas in south Wales so you should probably co-ordinate with them?
Martin

I sure you can start making the changes today (Friday) because the next snapshot is 6am Saturday, which takes 16hrs to render, and will hit the app early Sunday morning?

I can confirm a few of us have now started updating the speed limits, with the prospects that they will be available Sunday/Monday. Join on Discord for more info.

Yeah, I’ve been smashing through some in the south today. Hope all these mass edits haven’t activated a big red flashing light in Israel…

You guys may find this link useful: https://waze.cryosphere.co.uk/speedlimits/234/wales.htm

It shows all roads of type “Street” in Wales that are currently set to 30 mph, and will gradually update as speed limits get set to 20 mph. There’s a link on that page lists the counties and cities of Wales, to help you drill down. You’ll probably want to use it to find areas to work on rather than clicking each link one at a time.

There will be exceptions, of course, so don’t expect to get 100% and don’t blindly change every segment.
Be sure to check local maps before changing any speed limits!

Can you run an update on everything so we can see what’s left please?
Thanks
Martin
