I would like to report that for some time now, the navigator has been suggesting routes that are significantly longer in terms of travel time than those proposed by Google Maps.
Sometimes, a 3-hour route according to Google becomes over 4 hours on Waze, with routes that are inexplicably lengthened.
This has also happened on short trips: by not following Waze’s directions, I saved 10 minutes on a 5 km city route.
Just yesterday, there was a routing error while returning from Val di Fassa that had me following roads that looped back, increasing the mileage for no reason.
I am asking if any changes have been made to the routing system, as it no longer functions optimally and has become less reliable compared to Google Maps. Thank you.
Hi Lauretta, to help us understand the problem, could you tell us the destination you set? Also, since we don’t know if your route was supposed to include motorways or not, what did you have in the “avoid motorways” settings, yes or no?

My last trip involved traveling from Val di Fassa to the province of Mantua.
The settings do not exclude toll roads. Waze even suggested getting on the highway but, instead of having me enter directly at Egna Ora, it made me go back up the valley and then double back.
As I mentioned in the message, this isn’t the first time this has happened, and I’ve encountered inaccuracies in the selection of the best routes even on shorter stretches.

I imagine that when you say it wanted to send you back up the valley, it was then suggesting you go via Carezza and reach the highway at Bolzano. So, I ran some tests simulating a departure from both Moena and Mazzin to see what routes it offers: if I start from Moena and go to downtown Mantua, it always suggests going through Egna. I did some more tests: I tried starting from both Moena and Mazzin (to see how it behaves) with the destination set to Mezzocorona, which is a spot beyond the two likely highway entrances, so that the route isn’t influenced by other variables. It suggests two routes: one going down (estimated time 1h11m) and another that goes back up and turns left toward Carezza (time 1h20m). The difference isn’t much, so all it takes is a little bit of traffic toward Egna and that 9-minute gain is lost, making the other one more convenient. I agree with you that the climb to the Costalunga Pass isn’t a fast road, but the navigator’s calculation is based on the average of other users’ trips during the same period, so Sunday afternoon has a different value than Monday afternoon. From Mazzin, the difference is obviously a bit smaller. In my experience, I’ve seen that if Waze suggests a “strange” route on long trips, there’s usually something along the way, so I try to see if there are any accidents or slowdowns. On short trips, however, I agree with you 100 percent. I’ve seen suggestions “that you people wouldn’t believe”…

The route via Carezza is often flagged as preferable. What I found strange were the non-linear routes it suggests; I don’t know how to describe them.
In mid-November, the discrepancy between the route suggested by Waze compared to Google’s (which proved to be reliable) was over an hour!!
