Waze UK User Conference - June 28th

Waze are coming to London on Saturday, June 28th to meet up with the UK community, to discuss issues and talk about all things Waze. The event will be held at the Strand Palace Hotel, and will include a lunch. There may also be a social gathering or dinner on either Friday or Saturday evening.

Waze said they’d pay for 1 night’s accommodation. They might also pay towards travel expenses for those who live very far away - this does depend on costs and available budget.

This quick form is for people to register their interest so that we know how many would like to attend. We have until Sunday, May 25th to give expected numbers to HQ, so that they can book the venue.

Note: This event is for UK users only, and submitting an entry via this form does not guarantee a place as spaces are limited. Preference will be given to active editors and area managers.

If you have any questions, please post them below.

Some information from a (relatively) local resident about parking: there won’t be much.

If you can find an on-street parking spot anywhere in the vicinity of the Strand on a Friday or Saturday night, I think you will be extremely lucky!

The hotel website itself recommends parking at the nearby Covent Garden NCP car park. Pricing for over 4 hours (4-24h) is £38.20.

An online parking website tells me that there are pay-by-phone on-street bays in the area: £4.80 per hour, maximum stay 4 hours. And, of course, not likely to be free in a Friday/Saturday night.

My personal advice, if you’re driving to London, is to park up somewhere out of the suburbs and do the last leg of the journey by public transport. Charing Cross mainline station is easy walking distance, and Charing Cross, Leicester Square Embankment & Temple are the closest tube stations.

No Wazing on the train, please!

Waze said they’d pay for 1 night’s accommodation; I’ll ask about discounts for people who want 2 nights.

They might also pay towards travel expenses for those who live very far away. This does depend on costs and available budget.

(I’ll copy this into the original post)

As I live a mere 9 miles away, I’ll be there. And as I’ve a 24hr bus route only 100m from each end of my journey, I’ll be able to socialise well into the evening

Looking forward to meeting the people behind the names!

Count me in as a tentative yes… wife is off on a first aid course that weekend so technically I’m looking after the kids, but if we can arrange childminding then I’ll be there. Certainly will be good to be able to put faces to names!

Form filled in. I expect to drive nearly 300 miles down to London and staying with my cousin’s place. However, can I change my mind afterward?

I may get a train and stay in the hotel.

Hey folks. Last call for names, if you can make the event please complete the form today!

This is an amazing chance to meet folk from Waze (and of course a few of us UK Admins too), they’re bringing some of the big-hitter developers to discuss things like routing. You’ll get the chance to air your concerns, your likes and even influence future features. You’ll likely get a sneak peak at future changes in the client or editor and from past experience there is always some decent swag to take home at the end too!

Having been to a few of these I can highly recommend it!

Yes - as a relative newbie it’d be great to meet some AM/CMs.
I’ve just submitted the form - keep me posted on the details.

Guys please pull some strings. I want to meet you guys after my missing the Paris meet up last time. I’m not like a CM but I’ve been here as long as you guys and bar one or two small things we got a lot of the ground rules in place 3 years ago.

Blackmail: if you don’t let me come I’ll post dead Waze icons to your houses mwahaha… just kidding I can’t afford the postage

It looks like we accommodate all 22 of you who said you’d come. If you filled in the form before today, then you’re coming!

Waze have booked hotel rooms for the Friday night for those who requested them. I’ll ask (again) about special rates for additional nights. If you have to cancel for whatever reason, please let us know.

Regarding times, HQ said “Usually the meeting day starts at 9:00 and ends around 18:00-19:00. But again, as this is a self organised meetup you can set the agenda and schedule according to your needs.”

The majority of respondents said they’d prefer to have a social meeting on the Saturday evening, though I imagine there’d be an informal one somewhere near the hotel bar on the Friday night anyway.

Once you know how much your travel expenses is going to be, please email it to WazeUKCMs at gmail, and we’ll see how much we can get reimbursed.

I’ll post more info as and when we hear of any.

See you soon!

Friday Night? I had (obviously wrongly) assumed the 1 nights accommodation was going to be on the Saturday night (as there was nothing to indicate it was the Friday or Saturday). :frowning:

This may very well complicate things for me (and increase the costs as I would likely have to stay Saturday night too)…

Thanks Tim, I’ll need to book a room for the Saturday night too. Will the friday booking (thanks waze) be in my name if I call next week?

I’d need to book for the Saturday night too as I wouldn’t want to miss the party

Hi Tim, thanks for coordinating the meetup. I filled the form but not sure I’m in the list or not. I planned to drive but may change my mind to get a train instead. I hope I can claim it back? Ticket or petrol?

Waze don’t have any of our names yet, so unlikely.

Yes, you’re on the list Leo. Should be able to claim back some travel expenses, but I need to know roughly how much it is going to cost. I’ll send out a separate form for that.

Thanks. I’ll PM you.

Anything is better than nothing!

And can anyone let me know which would be the best airport to fly into? And then how to get to the venue so I can get a rough price?

Ta

Hi,

Stansted may not be too bad and there is a pretty regular rail link to London which is not unreasonably priced (if I remember).

Des. . .

Thanks Des! It looks like Gatwick will be my best option time/price wise… will know better once there’s a bit more info on rooms rates for the extra night and all that… doing it on a shoe string and all

Pip

Gatwick into Victoria is fast and frequent, with the 11 bus going from Victoria to the hotel, or Circle/District to Embankment and walk. You could also come into City Thameslink, exiting at the Fleet Street end to get the 11 going the other way.

For those coming into Kings Cross, St Pancras or Euston, you can get the 91 direct to the hotel, or tube to Charing Cross and walk.
