Wazers in Europe

I have reported 5 trips right now but I really find this annoying not to have the map.
What do I do with my empty maps that only display my trip ?
How can I add a road map in the background ?
Thanks

You can open a google maps window alongside waze though. Click on the coordinates link in the bottom left corner of cartouche and copy & paste the coordinates in the google maps window.

Hi,

How about using the data from http://www.openstreetmap.org/ to prefill your maps? It is CC licensed and pretty thorough, at least in the area’s I’ve checked.

Regards,
Nick

Yes… I didn’t know about this.
What a great thing.
Please Wazers… Do something about it and use these maps

Its licence requires that all derivative work be CC licensed as well. Waze’s eventual business model is to sell maps and data to third parties, and–I’m no lawyer–but I don’t think that would be possible under a CC licence.

Well, I figure it would take a lawyer to figure it out. I understand the business model they have and it makes a lot of sense, but unless they can bootstrap they map material to get people using it, it is unlikely to garner significant usage in Europe. The question is, if they use the OSM material initially, while also collecting the route data from ongoing use by users, would the new route data that they have collected constitute a “derived” work under the CC license. Once they have collected sufficient information on their own, they could discontinue use of OSM data and exclusively use their own collected data.
Furthermore, I assume their added value is not just providing the maps, of which there are already plenty of sources out there, even free such as OSM, for business and individuals to use, but more so the user generated and dynamic traffic and routing information they can generate. THAT is the real USP of this idea.
So it boils down to, what exactly is “derived” in this case.

Correct me if I am wrong but Waze has only been officially released in the US correct?

Obviously they want to cater to as many people as possible but my guess is they don’t have the resources/manpower to tackle every continent on the globe right now. It makes sense, get Waze up and running smoothly in the the US, then start on other contries.

No, Waze started in Izrael and US is second location.

and a general European release is behind the corner, as soon as they’ve finished setting up the new international server/website.

Hello,

I have read topic and I’m not sure is any sense to trace roads in Europe ? Recorded roads will be use in maps ? Have I waiting to EU version of Waze ?
I live in Poland and I like to participate in Yours project.
I have got Waze software on mine G1, installed as *.apk.

Best, Filo.

Any response ? Start or not to record roads in EU/PL?

How Can I help with Polish translation of Waze ?

Best, Filo.

You can start the translation on the Wiki
http://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
start a new Polish page, using one of the other languages as a template

Regarding the streets… I don’t think we have an easy path in our future.
If you haven’t found any free-for-commercial-use Polish map until now, it “probably” means it doesn’t exist. So yes, I think you should at least start mapping your area.

I have a theory:
the more roads people find the first time they start Waze, the more they’ll probably keep using it… which means we’ll have even more roads.
if new users starts Waze and finds nothing at all, they’ll probably just uninstall the app and forget about it.

it’s better to have few man-made roads now than nothing for months, just waiting for somebody to (eventually) finds a usable map.

I have translated most of text to Polish language. Some of words aren’t translated and I need additional description (for what used word) to correct translation to Polish language.

I have started recording mine traces, but still is unavailable trace done 14.11 :frowning:

Best, Filo.

The system is under heavy data flow in these days… since they’ve released the symbian and win versions the number of users has increased a lot, so it’s taking longer for the roads to be available in the cartouche.
check again in a couple more days

Today evening I had 6 another wezers on my Nokia screen

The best I had has been one user 150miles away :frowning:

I’m trying out Waze in Sweden  Not many roads exist yet though.

Don’t give up. In Prague, Czech Republic, there was nothing month ago. Now we have about 15% of all roads (30-40% major roads).

The newest live map shows freeways from a scale of 1:14M, a good opportunity to review the current situation in Europe.

A lot of roads in the Czech Republic and The Netherlands
Some roads in Italy and Germany
No highways in other countries, except for Belgium, but I’m pretty sure they’re done by a Dutch wazer.

So right :), but I have seen some traces in Belgium, so I’m sure there are some ‘active’ users there.

Oh, and don’t forget the work of our neighbors in Germany, near Duisburg/Oberhausen are some highways mapped (I really should drive over there, just to ‘connect’ ) .
