Wazers in Europe

I was bored, and just playing with the Waze client last night. So I started zooming out on the maps, and I was shocked to see a lot of Wazers driving around. There were about 15 in Europe (or the area I think is Europe, there’s no basemap, remember?).

1x UK
1x France (North)
1x Belgium
1x Austria (I think)
1x Italy (North)
2x Germany (West)
6x Netherlands (!!!)

So I guess it’s obvious you should upload to the NL app store first :).

That should be at least 2 in Belgium right now!

In the Czech Republik are also some wazers

I’m wazing a couple of days now and understand the system.
It would be nice if we could take it to the next step in Holland / the Netherlands now with a base map…is there any timetable available when this is gonna happen? Keep me addicted :stuck_out_tongue:

Count another in north Italy…

there’s also user Paciotti in Italy, even if I haven’t heard from him in a couple of weeks.

Well, we are searching for base maps, but it’s not easy to find ones that we can use. In the USA we have a free map from the USA governments, but elsewhere they are usually commercial (unless there are government agencies that have some parts). We’d be happy to learn if you are knowledgeable of such base maps in your respective countries.

There are no ‘free’ basemaps available for the Netherlands (maps are commercialised by the governement). I’m pretty sure the situation in Belgium is about the same. I think the UK might have a freely available basemap, but the rest of western europe is out of luck.

But if I see the speed of which the current map is developing (in an area with decent dataplans like the Netherlands), I think it won’t be long before the map data is up to par with the commercial (teleatlas & navteq) maps.

I think the Norwegian government offers it for free. Check out http://www.statkart.no/eng/Norwegian_Mapping_Authority/

Hi all,
I’m discovering this soft and would like to help using it in France…
How can I have a map of the roads ?
What can I do to help ?
What format is your map using ?
Can’t you base your map on Google Map ?
Thanks

  • As of today, there are no basic maps for Europe. You have to start building one from scratch.
  • Start by keeping Waze on as often as you can while driving around on your everyday route.
  • I don’t know, sorry.
  • No, they can’t. It’s a problem of licenses and (i presume) fees.

Thanks for your reply
How can I build a map from scratch ? Do you have a link to a tutorial ?
Thanks

There is a manual on the wiki: http://www.waze.com/wiki
The wiki is far from complete but it’s helpfull.

In short:
-Just start driving around with waze activated.
-If you drive roads which don’t exist yet, enable ‘Record new roads’.
-After a while(24-48h) the road will be processed by the server, and it will appear in CarTouche on this website
-In Cartouche you can edit your roads: Geometry, Roadtypes, Names, Directions, etc.
-After a while your roads will also appear on your(and others) client device. Not sure how long this takes, sometimes a few days, other times more than a week.

Hope this helps…

Of course this helps… a lot
I’ll try this starting today.
Thanks a lot

Good luck, a lot of roads to be done in France.
I’ll come help on route to my skiing-holiday next winter.

You must be a rich guy, dataroaming through France

I wish!
Not thought of that, stupid me

I leave wazing France to the French then.

I’ll start by my day-to-day trip
That would be cool if they could have an agreement with Google Maps… This would open a fantastic range of possibilities.

Where do you go on your skiing-holidays ?

Probably Les Arcs
