[WTA] what city to use when naming trunk roads

all roads have to be given a city name it belongs to. so how to name roads connecting smaller towns? for eg the trunk road “2” which passes thru towns like karak, lanchang, temerloh etc, plus countless smaller kampungs like kg sempadan, kg ranau panjang etc

My usual practice is:

  1. look for the road in Google Maps.
  2. right-click on the road.
  3. Click on “what’s here”.
  4. Use the city name that will be next to the postcode. (i.e. if GMaps says 26800 Karak, Pahang, I’ll enter Karak as the city name in Waze).

Also be reminded to always confirm that you enter indeed a city. If you look up Karak: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karak,_Pahang you’ll see eg all cities in Pahang, same exists for all other states as well.

so correct me if im wrong… for roads outside major cities, we use towns name in the city column/box?

Yes. And the GMaps method is just a rule-of-thumb but it has been ok so far for me in the Klang Valley.

I know that some places like Genting Highlands will show up in GMaps as Bentong, Pahang. Maybe this is an exception where it actually would make more sense to not follow GMaps and to use Genting Highlands as the City name instead.

According to the link above Bentong is the district and Genting Highlands is a town, so you’re right on the money.

So use Wikipedia when you’re in doubt or have no clue about these towns like me :wink:

i started karak hway but stopped for now coz…

  • heaps of unwanted roads stuck to the hway. im not AM there so its looking messy even after edit.
  • im not sure abt city. dont want to do double work coz road name is linked to city. started naming it kl according to gmap, then noticed gmap stop reference to kl just a bit further up. wikimapia referred to it as gombak.

Inform the area manager in a personal mail through Waze forum, that’s what I normally do. Hopefully he will help you then and clean it up.

What I noticed is that Google Maps is showing the borderline of WP and Ampang Jaya eg, so you can use that as an orientation eg where names should change then to another city. But that is only on some detail level.
