How is it possible to get almost 100.000 points in a week or even more? When I check Scoreboard and All there are users which have sometimes more than 100.000 in a week. Last week top score was 78571.
Just from driving this would have to be 26190km what is to possible. Points from editing are also not so high to get such amount. So how is it possible? :o
I agree that it is disappointing to do many, good edits and not see your name in the scoreboard.
Do remember though that “cheaters never prosper”… nor do we!
The bigger concern, IMHO, is if the high score “edits” are done in such a way as to actually harm the maps?
I’ll point out one issue because it should probably be changed. The editor counts unsaved changes made in the editor before saving, while the edit count should only count effective changes saved. I noticed that when using the R key to cycle through road types I was getting lots of unsaved edits. Using multi-select on a long road and using the drop down to change road type only counts as one edit. Not wanting to be a cheater I have not tested it to prove unsaved edits # = the number of edits credited, so I could be wrong. But if if I am right, one could just simply just hold down the R key to cheat.
In the long run I don’t think there’s much that can be done to prevent cheaters. Anyone could set up a macro to repeatedly move a road back and forth saving every step. Cheaters who get caught could be dealt with though.
Don’t confuse the edit counter with edits for points, the two are not the same! Single edits on multiple segments DO give multiple edits! The counter is merely a representation of the number of changes you can undo!
Also, multiple edits on one segment (eg moving it back and forth) only give 1 edit!
Adding to and repeating some of what Darren wrote: In the current editor, certain changes like repeatedly changing directionality as you’ve mentioned, changes the “unsaved changes” indicator in the browser, but this isn’t the same as the edits which are given points. That’s been the case for quite a long time. Any remaining gaps are being addressed server-side.
It’s easy to edit for points these days : simply get one of the scripts around, select the entire city with the landmark tool, apply city name, there you go, 500 streets have been named in 1 minute. Would have taken more than one night of proper edition (street name + city name + direction…) at least.
Look at a Country with a basemap where few AMs are working or just areas that no AM likes to care about. For example in southern Germany I’ve just started to name major roads (Bundesstrassen) and minor roads (Landes- und Kreisstrassen). Together with at least naming the cities and villages this can give a huge amount of edits and I think it definitely adds value to the map. I don’t even set a direction to the streets - that’ll come when people drive on it.
Ok, I have to admit that it’s much easier with WME with multiple selects (whole road, city area) than it was with Cartouche - but still you need to name them. This is probably one of the main reasons points “explode” since the introduction of WME.
Those people with 100k points a week are probably editing in areas that wheren’t named before.
I don’t know (and wonder) for ab212 and pistyag as they don’t have a single post in the forum. What makes me more concerened is HOW they edit without ever having a question. Ok, maybe the just read the wiki and are fine with it.
However, I know that lordsurfer does a very good job in Germany, he’s in the Top50 anyway and he’s also regularly in the forums.
By the way: Some of those highscorers are no longer in the list at all or just disappear the next week.
But a proper editor WILL edit directionality too. Leaving it to drivers is all good and well but the whole process is sped up if you edit proactively. Editing isn’t just about naming things.
The points haven’t exploded since the basemap, or since WME, it’s just in the last few months since people cottoned onto these mass “edits”. I’ve been editing using WME since it was in beta and on a basemap too and occasionally for long hours over many days in a week - I haven’t come close to those kind of scores.
If all you are interested in is points, then in the long run you will get bored because there’s no end goal there. Some of us have an interest in the maps and waze as a whole and seeing second rate or counter-productive work all over the place is disheartening to say the least!
Well I DO edit directionality for major and minor highway but not for street. However I didn’t add directionality for local streets:
a) I’m just not always sure
b) I’m not really “hunting” for the additional points
The main reason for naming the whole village on the basemap is that there’s ONE name - We had to hunt for duplicate (false) names all over Switzerland so I definitly know how difficult it can be to find a single (very small) segment that a newbie named wrong.
That’s why I think those users will go away by time. I just found that my own map updates and points increased dramatically since I really “built up” map areas systematically, i.e. naming major roads and cities.
Keep in mind that doing this might actually cause routing problems in the future. It is believed that if you edit a segment and it is improperly set to one-way it will be confirmed in that state.
Also, it is also not clear if the directionality is set to no entrance/unknown and then a Wazer drives the segment and then it is set to one-way via the automated processes if it will then ever be able to change into two-way.
If you edit a segment, you should edit all of the relevant properties, including directionality to ensure that you are not creating problems.
So this would mean I cannot name a whole village? Or would you set all roads to two-way and open the junctions?
I don’t know how others did it in earlier days but I often encounter villages where almost all junctions are locked. From my experience this occurs if you only set a segment to two-way without checking the junctions. See for example here for an area that has recently (Sep 2011) been updated but contains tons of red arrows with shift-A. Earlier edits with Cartouche have many of those red arrows anyway. It seems to me that many people have drawn roads but never connected them.
Is naming a village and setting Direction to Unknown an option?
