Are they B roads?
If not, what makes a road a “primary road” as waze puts it.? Certainly not googles opinion. Cross referencing with OS you find many “Primary roads” are nothing of the sort.
So with all those streets not named and other streets missing entirely why go to the bother of changing streets to Primarys (if they are not “B” roads) when waze theoretically has no colour for them (or enough colours/roads types for all the road types that we have)?
It doesn’t do anything for the map or navigation, and I would suggest that people seeing “primary roads” may consider them suitable for larger vehicles when some are no better than single tracks!
google is in fact the LAST point of reference anyone should be using, except as maybe a reference (streetview) where you can see the actual street signs and also the town and village marker signs like This.
Road types has been mentioned any number of times previously. I am sure it is a bone of contention. Likely to be so again.
Local knowledge is always good as you point out. Driving there is another equally useful knowledgebase.
The problem you have there is that, in a good number of cases, the roads (when last edited by whoever locked it down) was then perfect.
Just that Waze came along with some db issue or whatever it may be and then changes the roads, their line, the turn restrictions but leaves the name of the last editor (that character I just mentioned) as being responsible!
I must admit to having near fits when looking at some edits that have been carried out by some CM’s and “busy” editors. “How the *** could you leave this in this mess??!!”
But then I come across an area I know I did and the same s**t has happened. I didn’t leave it in that mess and no one else has messed with it. So I think that waze itself has issues they don’t even know about…
As a curiosity, a road can be two nodes from point A to point B. But if it curves and turns etc, it will get nodes added to “accommodate” the weaving nature of the road.
Is there a limit to the number of those extra nodes per section or does waze have a problem with such sections with a lot of additional nodes?
What may have happened here is a misaligned tile in the bing aerials. This happens sometimes: an tile or section of tiles isn’t quite aligned correctly with it’s neighbour(s). Since human vision is very good at spotting discontinuity in features, some careful “blurring” is used where images join up.
It looks like the GPS points currently match the new Google aerials for that road & roundabouts, so I’m guessing that there was a misaligned tile in the old Bing images which were then followed. It can be very easy to miss this - I realised I was dealing with exactly this problem earlier today in Glasgow (although not as severe). I only noticed the shift because I was at adding a new segment at high zoom and following the white lines on the road.
Given the generally low quality of GPS positioning with phones it probably didn’t have any real effect before and it won’t now. It just attacks our collective OCD (I feel a disturbance in the force).
Certainly isn’t good practice to leave incompleted roads locked for extended periods of time (if it’s being done deliberately and not, as has been indicated above, through the Waze backend just being stupid again), but it’s not a practice that is entirely without justification.
e.g. if you’re in the middle of editing a particularly tricky bit of the map where the aerial images are completely out of touch with the current state of play, and you then get unavoidably called away from WME before being able to finish off the edits, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to then lock down all the partially completed edits to minimise the risk of someone coming along in the meantime without any local knowledge (which ties in neatly with the main point of this thread), seeing your “mess”, looking at the aerials, and “fixing” everything…
i notice that my areas last edits are often attributed to people who live miles away who have
higher locks than myself. Even though I am an AM my max lock is 3 and it frustrates the hell out of me that people who live in different cities with no local knowledge make changes then lock that I am unable to repair.
Fortunately I am able to call upon Des to unlock for me if necessary but it shouldn’t be the case that an AM needs help to sort out errors locked by someone from miles away.
One particular edit i noticed recently was the one way road around a recycling centre, it had been changed from how I set it to the opposite way around , how this person from another city decided that it would be better the other way I really don’t know and the consequences are minor but really , was the editor so short of points that they needed to do that ?
FYI I am a driver for the post office and have exceedingly good knowledge of my local area so I think that even if i am only a level 3 editor who drives daily around my local city I should be able to ‘trump’ edits from out-of-towners.
