Application Form for Area Manager [UK]

Anyone who uses Waze can edit the Waze map. An Area Manager is an editor who has chosen to maintain a specific area of the map.

Duties of an Area Manager:

  • Being thoroughly familiar with the UK Editing Best Practice Guide in the Wiki
  • Proactively improving the map in their area: naming roads, correcting geometry, setting turns correctly, etc
  • Making necessary changes when road layouts are altered.
  • Dealing with roadworks: making any changes required to keep routing working correctly and monitoring the situation
  • Responding to and acting upon Update Requests and Map Problems
  • Approving/deleting traffic enforcement cameras as reported by users
  • Acting as a mentor to other editors, offering advice & support through the forums & PMs
  • Regularly visit the forums/the UK discord so you can remain aware of the current best practices for editing the maps

When assessing an application to become an Area Manager, these are some of the things we will take into consideration:

  • Experience: we would typically expect an applicant to be at LEAST level 2 (3000 edits) and prefer 3+ months of editing.
  • Quality of Edits: your edits should comply with best practices in the Wiki. We expect to see evidence of adding real value to the map - large amounts of trivial edits are insufficient.
  • Participation in the UK Discord: much of the editing practices are developed by people like us - and YOU. Getting involved in the discussions on Discord demonstrates an interest in editing. It also shows the communication skills you need when dealing with new editors in your Area.
  • We would expect a first application to be for your home area - somewhere where you regularly drive and have local knowledge. Over-large applications may be rejected or reduced: around 10x10 miles would be the maximum for a first area.
  • Speed limits & House Numbers: There are currently a lot of editing points available for setting speed limits and adding house numbers. However, these activities alone do not demonstrate the editing quality required of an Area Manager. Setting speed limits and adding House Numbers whilst ignoring other mapping issues will leave your name on those problems. It will be a disadvantage when applying to become an Area Manager.

If you would like to become an Area Manager or extend your existing area, please complete this form:

> Application for initial or expanded AM area in the UK <- Use wktmap.com to draw the polygon -
Only strings starting “Polygon(” will be accepted. Applications with Web links or “geometrycollections” will be rejected as Waze will not understand them.

Please also keep the polygon as simple as possible. Overly complicated polygons can be problematic.

Applications will be reviewed and approved by the Country Administrators and may take up to a week or more. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us. Our email address can be found on the UK Wiki, or open a thread on Discord and @admin.

Update: The following note has been added to the list of things we consider when looking at AM applications:

  • Speed limits: There are currently a lot of editing points available for setting speed limits. However, this activity by itself does not demonstrate the editing quality required of an Area Manager. In fact, setting speed limits on large numbers of segments whilst ignoring other mapping issues will leave your name on those problems and will be a disadvantage when applying to become an Area Manager.
