Thanks for your interest in becoming an Area Manager (AM) with Waze Australia! This volunteer role is a great way to take your map editing to the next level and help improve the driving experience for Wazers in your local community.
What’s an Area Manager?
An Area Manager is a trusted map editor who takes responsibility for maintaining and improving a specific area of the Waze map. Once approved, your nominated area will be added to your editable map area, even if you haven’t driven there recently. AM access remains active as long as you’re contributing—just note that if there’s no editing activity for 90 days, the role will expire.
What does an Area Manager do?
As an Area Manager, you’ll be expected to:
- Keep the map accurate and up to date by fixing road geometry, names, turns, closures, and other changes
- Monitor and respond to roadworks, new developments, and other local changes
- Regularly check and resolve Update Requests (URs) and Map Problems (MPs) in your area
- Follow and champion the Australian map editing guidelines as documented on Wazeopedia
- Collaborate with other area, state and country managers to maintain the health of the map
- Contribute to building a supportive and welcoming map editing community by sharing your knowledge with others on the Waze Australia Discord Server and the Waze Australia forum
- Be a friendly and helpful presence in the community.
Who can apply?
We’re looking for editors who are:
- Active and involved in the Waze Australia community, especially the Waze Australia Discord Server
- Following editing guidelines and best practices
- Can lead by example, but also receive constructive feedback to grow into a senior editor
- Nearing or already at level 3 or higher
- Producing high-quality edits that add value to the map for drivers
- Communicating respectfully and helpfully with others.
Applications for Area Manager are reviewed by the Australian Coordinators, in consultation with your State Manager. While not essential, having an established connection and support from your State Manager will strongly support your application.
How to apply
- If you haven’t already, reach out to your State Manager and express your interest in becoming an Area Manager.
- Together with your State Manager, use the Well-known Text (WKT) visualisation tool and draw the area you’d like to manage. As a general guide, in population-dense areas we only permit a small polygon, whereas larger polygons are accepted in regional and remote areas.
- Copy the WKT code starting with the word “polygon”, fill out the application form below with your details, and paste the WKT code into the form:
Thanks for stepping up!
