I get less than one hour on a full charge, while running your program. I don’t need the screen, but have not figured out how to turn it off. It would be nice if it turned on momentarily, perhaps, when verbal messages are coming up, but otherwise, it’s not something I need that badly. I also ride a motorcycle, and will be glad to drive and add data for the network (even when I don’t need directions), but I cannot do so if it means my battery will be dead when I arrive at my destination. Alternately, it would be nice if the screen could be dimmed - if it cannot be shut. I’m using an HTC Touch Diamond.

I don’t know if it’s the same for htc touch, but on my Android version I can go to Settings -> General and then switch “Back Light On” off.
The screen will then be switch off after a while.
On my diamond, this program forces the the screen to stay on - with backlight. My normal settings are very dim, but when I run this program, it comes on full. I tried, after reading your suggestion, to turn it off - same thing, the program forced it on.

I made a post with a Bad video, on another section >http://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=370< showing how my HTC Touch Diamond “Flashes”. And, yes, this program is a battery KILLER.
I absolutely LOVE the program and would love to munch roads all day long (oh, I’m on a random road about 6 hours a day too!), but now I just watch for uncharted roads and load up to submit traffic info.
I have the same problem with my Sprint Touch Pro 2. Its a battery killer and it won’t let me turn off my screen.
I agree that it would be a great benefit to have a setting to shut the screen off.
You can always just manually turn off the screen or pull another program to the foreground. You will still get the audio directions but without the screen drain taking place.
I can’t seem to manually turn off the screen while Waze is running, foreground or background, on my Windows Mobile device. When I hit the power button, which will normally turn off the screen, the screen goes blank for a second, then comes back on. The buttons and the touch screen are disabled, like they normally would, but the screen stays on. Pressing the power button again re-enables the buttons and touch screen.
not on my touch pro. When Waze is loaded and I manually turn off the screen, it just pops back on to my lock screen. I would also like to be able to dim and or turn off screen while using waze.
This indeed would be a great idea - have Waze automatically turn off the screen until new route incidents or directions happen or are upcoming.
Mapopolis does this.
On my Samsung Galaxy, Waze never turns off the screen, even after disabling Backlight.
The screen cannot be turned off on my HTC Fuze, HTC Touch Pro or my HTC Touch Pro 2. Yeah, it sucks.
That’d be quite nice. TomTom does this with their normal GPS units as a method of decreasing visual distraction; it’ll turn the screen off until two miles before the next turn. Ours could be more adaptable than this (two miles on freeways, 1 mile on most other streets, 0.5 miles on residential streets), even.
