I think that an option to dim or blacken screen when there’s far between turns would be a great way to save battery life.
And save OLED screens! Massive +1 on this from me. Google Maps does it, why can’t we ![]()

I’d just like to see it dim the brightness on the screen when it’s not displaying an upcoming turn or an alert. There’s a huge difference in battery consumption and heat when you turn down your brightness.
I’d just like it to dim the screen when it gets dark out. As it is I have to hover my hand to trigger ASR (which I have set to OFF but it still turns the screen off) and then when the screen comes back auto-brightness in iOS has done its job. Without the ASR bug/trick, I would lock the screen then unlock to get the same effect.
Is my issue just me? Just iOS? Just iPhone 4? I dunno.
I don’t have any problem with Waze going into the night mode, which is just a color scheme, but the light sensor on the phone has almost completely stopped working, regardless of what app I’m in. When I used to read in iBooks in bed at night, when I’d turn the lights out, the screen would dim considerably after about a minute. That doesn’t seem to work anymore most of the time.
Using Waze, I’ve manually switched to Day Mode so many times, just so I could see map details, that I haven’t noticed if it seems overly bright in night mode. I’ve also taken to manually dimming the brightness when I see that the charger isn’t keeping up with the battery drain.
Could just be iOS… the phone has no problem getting brighter if light floods the car at night. It just won’t get dim after the ambiant light drops again. Oh well.
