Fragmentation for a small country as ours is not a good idea.
Proposal to remove @WazeBeNeLux and keep the country specific Twitter/Facebook accounts.
Update: English recap
The channel to go: @WazeBelgium and the Belgian facebook.
We choose, for now, to user dutch and french, to get closer to the local community. However, the use of two languages in one channel, could result in some ‘scatter’, if one would like to focus on one language.
If we would use one language, like english, we think, experience, that french-speaking people experience more problems or distance to the community.
Update - English recap
I can imagine that people get annoyed by both seeing French and Dutch messages in the Twitter stream or on the Facebook page. Wouldn’t it be better to use only one language in the community (being English).
Update - English recap
In a country (and community) as small as ours it’s important that we stick together. This can only be achieved when we use one language - English.
The topic starter started in Dutch, so… But maybe we should step up in English, and see if anyone, nativly speaking French, will participate… Anyone willing to make a short conclusion, up till now, in French of English?!
I have a question : Is Waze having severe problems for the time being ? On my side, I see many sync issues when trying to edit and it does not synchronize favorites on my phone anymore.
We started the belgium forum in english, as there weren’t any CM’s/Champs that were speaking french (well enough) to give support to the community.
At this moment we have Steven who’s helping us a lot for the Belgium community and we have deeggo who is also speaking french pretty good.
As Steven says, the topic starter desides in which language he want’s to get support. This works pretty good. We also invited the community to help with translations. Sometimes it takes a little longer, but it’s getting better.
At the moment we still make announcements in English, but this have to change to Dutch and French. German we will skip for the moment as it is a really small group.
Wiki is also available in both french and dutch. Probably German in a few weeks…
The tts guidance voice will be available in flemish and probably french soon.
So using English for social media is a bad idea. Those are the local, country wide platforms. English isn’t an official Belgium language. It will be strange not to use 1 of the 3 available languages. For Facebook and G+ we can maybe combine both dutch and french in 1 post. For Twitter this will be a little harder as it exceed the maximum amount of characters in most posts.
If you have to chose only one language for the social media, you must chose English because it is the only common languages that everybody speaks without discriminating the other half of Belgium because you don’t use their language.
I Prefer the combine dutch and french in 1 post above the double posts now being made.
I’m not that shure about this… We already got some remarks about French speaking people who say English isn’t that easy for a lot of French speaking people. The gap between Dutch and English is smaller than the gap between French and English…
But i personally always make the assumption that a lot of people who are into smartphones / IT, also have basic knowledge of English… The upcoming use of smartphones could undermine this assumption.
Noted… you would have larger messages in that cas, on Facebook you can do that, on Twitter it’s less easy…
Uptill now, the facebook and twitter account are linked and share messages, to take less time and keep both ‘a live’, but in time, we should/will split those up…
We see that the Facebook-way is more dynamic and growing, for now…
You could consider automatic translator bots who translate the english @WazeBelgium into @WazeBelgiumNL and @WazeBelgiumFR. Then you have all three, people who understand English, like me, can then follow @WazeBelgium.
Automatic translator bots… hmm… ok… i think i know what they do… but could you give more information? What is the quality of the translation? Not that my French is that good, by far…
I’m flemish, and my french is not as good as I wish it to be… understanding ok, speaking? (I manage, but i don’t feel comfortable) – I do feel comfortable in english though…
nonetheless, at work I’m forced to conversate with people that don’t speak dutch very well. And although I do try to speak english (even with the french!), that doesn’t always works out as the best option… some persons in Belgium don’t speak dutch or english well enough… others speak dutch, but no french or english… and there are inbetweens who understand the other language, but don’t speak it sufficiently…
french/dutch or english… english shouldn’t be the best option in a dutch/french/german speaking country (although it sounds like a typical belgian solution), and the problem remains that not everyone speaks english fluently
… so… I think we should all take some water with the wine, and realise we all have our limitations… if we all try to comprehend each other, and comply and try to find each other in a common language? – we should realise we are volunteers, and we are who we are: multilingual… a post where someone asks in dutch or french, and gets a response in english or dutch/french, why not?
personally I don’t like to see the same message in two or three different posts, so i would try to be multilingual in one post instead of 2/3 posts… (if possible) – and don’t flame someone for ‘not being multilingual’ ??
(after all: my dutch voice in Waze sounds pretty northern to me <Netherlands)
