Dirt road (ford) routing

So I understand that the App has 3 options for users:

  • Allow - use them at all times
  • Don’t allow - don’t ever use them
  • Avoid long ones - only use them if under 300m in length.

I have a UR stating that Waze refuses to use a ford section, I can’t find anything wrong with the mapping, so firstly what have I missed :?

On a general note I can’t get anything to suggest a route over it, does anyone know what LiveMap and therefore the other route checking scripts, are set to regarding dirt roads as I can only assume it is don’t’ allow.

I wonder if this is related to the migration from the “off-road” segment type to the “unpaved” segment attribute… From what I recall, the “dirt road” option in the app now only affects how routing will behave over segments which have the unpaved attribute set, and any segment which is still set to the “odd-road” type will incur a heavy time penalty making it almost certain not to be selected as part of a through route.

Have to admit I haven’t found any clarification on the whole off-road vs unpaved thing. As the segment was already check as unpaved I’ve set it to Street to give it a try.

This appears to have done the trick. If Champs would like to confirm/clarify the usage of off-road / not maintained road type as it now seems to be leaning towards the non-drivable category.

Routing in Waze is managed by time penalties and if I remember correctly from a recent conference the penalties were changed with the new unpaved attribute:

Unpaved attribute = 1 hour penalty
Off-road/4x4 segment type = 3 hour penalty

The mapping suggestion was that unpaved segments should be driveable in a normal car, albeit with care, whereas off-road segments should be 4x4 territory only (and their use can be controlled by the in-app preference).

Fords are a tricky subject, as some people are happy to drive through them and some people would rather avoid them, so without a specific preference in the app it’s hard to satisfy everyone.
