Not sure if it’s a map issue or someone is deliberately deleting cameras, but half of the gantry cameras have disappeared from the M1, J6A to J11.
I did add 2 back in yesterday between 10 and 11 and approved them on the Map Editor this morning.
Just had a look now and both have disappeared again.
The 4 that are left have Dave2084 on them which I guess has stopped them disappearing.
I’ve also had this happen on the M6 from J12 - 13. I noticed it on Tuesday and have re-added them in the client. However, they’ve still not appeared in WME to be approved!
And the two that have remained have also been last edited by Dave2084. It’s a conspiracy! either that or people that haven’t read the wiki are removing speed cameras at the position of average speed cameras?
The way cameras are handled is one of my pet dislikes about the editing side of Waze, hence the emergence of the CWL functionality in URO…
If I want to add a new road, petrol station etc., I load up WME and add it.
If I want to delete a road, petrol station etc, I load up WME and delete it.
Equal levels of effort required. Perhaps it should be harder to delete something than to add it, but equal is good.
If I want to add a new speed camera, I have to drive to the location, submit a camera report, hope the client manages to post the report and doesn’t just silently lose it down the back of the air vent, get home, wait for the unconfirmed camera to appear in WME, hope that the camera is still tagged with my user ID so there’s no question mark over whether it’s the correct unconfirmed camera I’m editing, tweak its placement, set the speed, tick the approved box and save. Then wait for it to go live, revisit the location and check it’s appearing correctly in the client, making further tweaks to positioning as required until all is working as desired.
If I want to delete a camera, I load up WME and delete it…
Clearly UNequal levels of effort required.
Then there’s the further issue of how easy it is for cameras to be unapproved again by just a few users deliberately or accidentally clicking the not there button in the client. There’s no way to automatically change the status of a road or other map object from within the client, yet cameras are fair game.
At least one otherwise enthusiastic AM completely ignores speed cameras. Waze have chosen to make them very difficult for editors to maintain, this editor can find better things to do.
Let’s not forget the cam’s added by enthusiastic Wazer’s at almost every gantry on the M1 between J25 to J28…
These were check and set a good long while ago but one of the CA’s and no other cameras need to be added.
Maybe it is high time to ask Waze HQ to remove the camera add functionality from the app?
Ah, but if we don’t allow enthusiastic users to add new cameras, bang goes my bi-weekly sweep across London deleting them all again…
Besides, with all the remodelling work on the M25, it won’t be long until there genuinely are some new camera locations to be marked out and maintained, as pointed out by kayveedw, so that’ll keep me busy on the drives to and from the in-laws
What I’d like to see is allowing the addition of cameras from within WME, bringing them in line with every other map object, and then replacing the add camera option in the client with a dedicated UR option to report a new camera, again bringing them in line with things like missing roads etc. Given the problems I noted above re the reliability of dropping camera markers in the first place, and then having them merged with other markers anyway, what I tend to do now is first drop a UR at the exact location and then as soon as that’s posted OK drop a camera marker.
As far as I remember, in Israel only a handful of editors (CMs/L5+???) have the permissions to edit cameras. Not sure if the “not there” functionality works though.
Yes. I “cruise” the M1 J25 up and delete the flotsam. But surprisingly enough the was a genuine one missing (as per streetview at least) and someone had added a cam there so I have moved and updated…
Funny that should happen whilst this topic is on the go!
On this subject, (and apologies if this has been brought up before - I’m quite new here) is there some way of reducing / controlling the flagrant point-whoring of users adding cameras willy-nilly every few yards. Most of them seem to have “world” prefix usernames (not sure if that’s relevant - these names always seem to be quite high up in the scoreboard). I mean, I don’t mind clearing a few down and earning some easy map-edits, but it’s a bit annoying!
I spotted some missing camera’s yesterday but don’t know if they have disappeared or just never been added on the M5 between junctions 4a to 6 for the central reservation barrier renewal. I haven’t been on that section of the M5 for a while but thought the road works started several weeks ago so was surprised that the camera’s didn’t show up on Waze.
I can’t mess about on an iphone trying to add camera’s on the move on a busy motorway, especially one with narrow lanes in the rush hour, and maybe there are too many others like me so that’s why the camera’s haven’t been reported until now.
When I got home I checked the map and someone had reported the northbound camera’s, a couple looked to be in the right place so I have approved all in that section by the same user but no idea if they are all in exactly the correct location. I guess the exact position is not so important with SPECS just as long as you know the whole section is covered and someone will soon mark as not there if they are too far out.
It just needs some brave soul to drive the southbound section now and to add those camera’s!
