Dont copy if u dont know

dont copy google maps if u dont know the road names. just leave it blank. other wazers will input the correct info later on. google maps is full of errors. eg jln sg besi/jln tun razak is wrongly labelled jln yew. jln yew actually runs parallel further down.

error on google maps

error on waze

gmaps full of error:-o

BTW, you can edit Google Maps as well and improve their map quality

Andreas

what do u use to edit gmaps?

i tried google map maker last year n gave up after a couple of edits. among the reasons why… cleanup edits took too long to be approved; roads didnt match between gmapmaker and gmaps.

Before this goes any further…
Using Google maps to copy anything is illegal, do NOT do it. If you want to argue the point, speak to Waze it’s them that want this enforced. Details why are on the forum

What is illegal are hacks that are using Google’s or any other non licensed map provider as an aerial background. Using the street name or looking up the bending of a road published on one of these sources isn’t illegal.

I think the word “copy” wasn’t being meant in the way of illegal usage but thanks for pointing it out again!

Thanks for your comment,

Andreas

Actually, you’re wrong, and such a blanket description of what is ok is not a good idea. Different countries have different laws on copyright issues. Better to not use it at all and just use your local knowledge. Waze themselves have said not to use Google, probably best to do what they ask regardless of Law.

i agree in some places too
for example as im editing Pasir Puteh roads last week
5.835534,102.403564 - Jalan Che Yem is labelled in gmaps as Jalan Che Yew

i support people who wanna build new roads but if you havent drove on those roads just leave the road name blank

And if you don’t have GPS tracks or a paved road, don’t bother editing it in at all!
Put it this way…
One of the South American countries was found to be using other data, and the WHOLE country was deleted by Waze. Not just one or two roads, the whole country!
Remember that when any of you use any other source for anything! You’re all n00bs here, take it from an experienced editor

Again, not sure why you misunderstood. Looking up a roads name in Google Maps isn’t copyright violation. Taking a look at Google Maps to see the outline of a road isn’t copyright violation.

I’m not talking about using scripts that change the underlying aerial to Google Maps or other commercial sources, that would be copyright violation.

In regards to n00bs here not sure who you mean, if you mean me then you’re pretty wrong. I was as far as no 7 in Waze, currently moved down to no 30 out of 20 million users. Your name is not in the top 50 but I assume you mean experienced editor from the level of UK, not world wide. Whatever, we should stop posting in this thread, I think we made pretty clear what is copyright violation and just hope that nobody in Malaysia (or any other country) violates it!

Andreas

There is no issue on copyright. Dror has SPECIFICALLY stated NOT to use any other sources for ANY purpose. He works at Waze, and is one of their high up people, it’s him that’s said it on behalf of Waze. So there is no dispute about copyright or whatever, they want us using the supplied aerials, GPS tracks and local knowledge, nothing else.

I don’t see what the issue here is. What the company says, goes.
