I have noticed a couple of times now that some roads have had traffic warnings (yellow coloured road and measured average speed) where the average speed is actually greater than the actual speed limit!!
Given there is no way to actually tell Waze what the speed limit of a section of road is, by what means is it making the determination that the average speed is “slow”? Would it be based on road type? If so it may explain why urban “Minor” roads have a higher expected speed than what they actually are. Maybe?
And on to speed cams! Waze recognises only one speed cam and the red light cam.
In reality we have 3 types of speed cams in operation in the UK. Static fixed speed cams, SPECS average speed cams and Variable speed cams.
Is there ever any likelihood that Waze will, one day, recognise these?
It would also be really nice to be able to add the cams directly in from the editor if we know where they are.
Regarding traffic jams, I believe that Waze alerts on traffic based on some percentage or value lower than the average speed of the segment. So in this case it seems that Waze either does not have a good sense of the average speed on that segment or possibly that many people or traveling faster than the posted speed limit and Waze has an average segments speed higher than the posted speed limit.
Also, you may want to check if there is a railroad running parallel to the road in question. I do not know what the average speed of UK-railtraffic is, but 1 single Wazer on a train can mess up speeds everywhere he passes closely to a street - Waze will merge his ride to the next street, and those “fast” countryroads will be preferred in routing ever after. In the process he may kill off trafficjams as well, and collect wazepoints for that!
At least we have the facility to nudge the position now
Personally I’d like see the ability to load and display external POIs so I can integrate Waze with CamerAlert, as a bonus we could use free or licensed POI lists that would not easily integrate into the current Waze platform (licensed POI lists like CamerAlert cannot be added to Waze but can be added to your device).
On a side note I deleted about 100 cameras from the section of the M1 north of Nottingham in the variable speed limit zone and left (and confirmed) just the ones that are actually there using accurate reference data! (Note: as it’s a variable zone a left the speeds blank)
Ahh… I was wondering what should be set for speed on Variable cameras.
I was clocking cams up to J26 recently and only where there were 1) gantrys and 2) painted measuring stripes.
Can either be deleted or moved if not quite in the correct location (Neither google nor bing shows the new M1 section correctly as yet), What ref guide do you use?
I’m seeing this as well. Posted speed is 45mph yet Waze is showing the street yellow with 47mph. That’s not right. If we could post the speed limits and they could show optionally on screen, like our speed, that would be great. We also have a Garmin and it has the speed limit on display as well as our speed. It’s nice, because you don’t always see the speed limit signs here in the US.
Waze currently has no concept of speed limits. The traffic jam function is based on the average speeds that Waze has seen on the road. If there are not many Wazers around or the road was just mapped or re-mapped in Waze, the data needs to be built. Eventually the data will accumulate and the jams be more accurate.
