EV Charging points - A new UK Project

EDIT: Please see update on this (posted 24th July 2023).

As I mentioned a few days ago, we are now about to embark on a major project to import, review and correctly position all the EV Charging point in the whole of the UK.

These will be initially added to the WME as PUR’s and will initially be locked to L4. We expect a trial batch of about 500 to arrive within the next day or so. Once we have worked through and cleared these and checked the process actually works as expected, we will get the first of several larger imports,

In total there are around 24,000 to do (of that about 8,000 are inside the M25, so the London editors are going to be particularly busy).

The process is fairly simple, but will take time:

Identify an EV PUR, Accept it, move it to the correct position, if needed update the address details and whether it is a public one or a restricted use (such as in a hotel car park, purely for the use of customers).

Add any details about the location of the Charging point in the car park - such as “Chargers are located in the NE corner of the Car Park” This goes in the Location in Venue box.

Please do not change the other details about the charger. If you think something is wrong, please post the link and details in the Editors Requests forum.

If there is already an existing EV place point there, then merge the 2, using the data from the new one, but any useful data (photos?) from the original one. If the data conflicts then leave the two and post the location in the Editors Requests forum and someone else will have a look.

If there is no sign of any charger there (unlikely as the data has been supplier by the actual Charger providers) then again, leave the PUR or accepted place point, and post it in the Editors Forum for one of us to check.

The Champs have a spreadsheet to report back any issues we find while doing this work.

It is important that you do not reject any of these, as this breaks the link back to the source data and will probably result in it either being lost forever or keep being re-added (I am not sure which)

This is the biggest project we have undertaken and the launch of this feature in Waze in the UK is dependent on how quickly we can complete this task, so please can I ask you all to spend as much time on this as you can spare over the next few weeks.

Thanks

Excuse the ignorance here, and I don’t mean any negativity as I know the lock level is set by Waze, but I do find the L4 restriction odd. Why not include AMs? Or is that just not something that Waze can specify?

I guess my confusion is that as an AM, albeit L3, I (like others) will not be able to accept these PURs, yet I can add chargers and all of their associated information (identical to what comes via the feed) manually without question.

With 24k of these to process after the trial, AMs like myself are going to find their areas littered with good-to-go PURs that we simply can’t help out with which feels a bit frustrating. Not only in respect of improving our areas, but also to help out higher level editors and to assist with project completion.

I do hope that the lock level is looked into, especially as there are going to be eager AMs like myself that would happily churn through their entire area to get it done and dusted

The initial lock level has been set by HQ and we will use this at least until the trial is completed. Once we have a better understanding of what is involved, it may be appropriate to ask for this to be lowered, as we did with the Koifish map suggestions.

Having said that, even after lowering the lock, the majority of the work to resolve the Koifish suggestions was still done by the senior level editors. and so it may be that not all AM’s are as keen to take on these issues as you are.

Watch this space…

As the more observant of you may have realised, the first of the EVCS PUR’s have now started to arrive in the WME.

We are still awaiting access and instruction on how to update the control spreadsheet and so please can I ask that you all hold off from doing anything with these until I post the OK here.

Thanks

Is this going to be a regular thing where EV’s are uploaded? Is there any scope to tie these into Fuel stations or will they just be a separate entity for now? I’m just aware there is a massive project a few months off in the GM area that may see hundreds installed but not sure if this would be picked up as a “regular” upload or if its just a case of add them as you see them :stuck_out_tongue:

When I checked the forum post by Brett last night, I believe it was mentioned that the UK’s EV networks list isn’t being populated until after this weekend’s stream.

Unless the EVCS feed can override this, am I right in presuming we’ll have to wait anyway? When I tried quite a while ago to add basic info to EV chargers in my area, it wouldn’t accept any manual input.

Edit: For clarification, I mean the actual Network field for the EVCS place:evnetwork.png

evcs feed 1 - Editor user profile (waze.com) Seems they are being added :o

At this time we are only talking about PURs from the data provider, it is highly likely that this will be an ongoing drip feed in the future. I would suggest you don’t manually add any EVCS to the map as we have 25,000 expected from the feed to review and the more we manually try to add the more merging we will have to do at the same time.

As Ian has mentioned there is a small number of PURs already showing in WME that are locked to L4 but we should not take any action on these as we are expected to be validating the accuracy via a Google Sheet which we don’t have edit access to at present and all L4 editors wishing to be involved will need to work from.

This is a stand alone project to get Waze EV ready and is not tied to any other function in Waze. Waze would happily do similar with fuel stations if we can provide an open source feed for them to use.

OK all, I think we are ready to start, and a smack on the wrist for those who have already started, 13 have been processed so far!!!

Please read the above information and the brand new draft Wazeo page - https://wazeopedia.waze.com/wiki/UnitedKingdom/Electric_Vehicle_Charging_Station before starting.

We will open a new sub forum just for the EVCS PUR work in the next few hours. Until then please post in this thread.

For this initial batch of PUR’s please post a line in the thread for each one you do ( or decided not to do).

We need a permalink to the charging point and any comments you want to make, - wrong location, can’t find it, added easily, etc

any questions, please ask before acting. We need to do this carefully and correctly so we understand what needs improving before we get the main import of these, otherwise we will just go under with the amount of work.

Thanks in advance for you work on this important issue.

Point not found. Streetview is 2023 and does not show a charger here.

Is this a private point and acceptable?

This charging point appears to be in the Hillingdon Sports & Leisure Complex car park and can be seen in SV images.

StreetView appears to be from 2018 at best and can be seen as the first 2 bays in from the car park entrance from further away.

Whoops, looking a the copywrite date, not the image date.
Now added correctly.

Had 4 PUR’s come through. I’ve accepted three and left one unapproved for now pending feedback.

Accepted - Changed to Restricted as parking in the charging bays appears to be restricted to permit holders.

Not added - GSV and aerials show a building site. Crawley council website doesn’t list these 2kW wall outlets; they only list 22kW chargers in a slightly different location within their multi-storey car park.

I also came across a provider that’s not listed on the Wiki page:

Name: EB Charging (although owned by Blink Charging)
Website: https://blinkcharging.co.uk/

The PUR comes through with the website set as ebcharging.co.uk, however this immediately redirects to Blink Charging. Quote from their website:

Not able to find these on the Google Sheet and needs to be fed back to HQ for comment;

bp pulse - Seahouses - https://waze.com/en-GB/editor?env=row&lat=55.58123&lon=-1.65419&s=8654178746367&zoomLevel=19&venueUpdateRequest=234816044.-1946479178.27727122

Have I missed something? Can’t see a link to the GSheet anywhere?

The EVCS is located up against the store building, I’ve placed an MC

As these are UK 3-pin plug types I would leave this PUR alone, this is likely not a public charger and for employees only.

The wiki is work in progress there is a lot of information yet to add, Waze have given us 255 providers so far.

Many thanks - I can see it now if I look over the hedge on GSV. Didn’t notice it the first time!

Original post updated.

Having mistakenly used ‘Description’ instead of ‘Location’ (now corrected); which, if either, will appear in The App and if not both, what is the purpose of the other one - if you see what I mean?
